On May 25, 2022, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree appointing Alexander Kurenkov as the new Minister of the Russian Federation for Civil Defense, Emergencies and Disaster Management. He headed the Ministry of Emergencies instead of Yevgeny Zinichev, who tragically died near Norilsk. The position of acting head of the department was held by First Deputy Alexander Chupriyan.
