2022: Creation of the Russian analogue of the Varian radiation therapy system

Rosatom allocated more than 228 million rubles to create an analogue of the Varian radiation therapy system, as reported in the Russian state corporation in mid-June 2022. The project as part of Rosatom is being implemented by the Research Institute of Technical Physics and Automation (NIITFA).

In 2022, we expect an experimental sample of a new generation toroidal linear accelerator, which is designed to treat cancer using the most modern radiation therapy methods. This device received the working name "Torus," - said the general director of JSC "Rusatom Healthcare" Igor Obrubov.

Rosatom allocated 228 million rubles to create a Russian analogue of the Varian radiation therapy system

According to him, the system is less demanding on the installation site: it can be placed in a specialized room that meets the requirements for the placement of a gamma-therapeutic device. To ensure the reproducibility of treatment, individual and standard fixing devices are used that can reduce the error when laying the patient, and further adjustment of the patient's position is made using a treatment table with five degrees of freedom. Compared to analogues, the maximum size of the irradiation field has been increased - up to 28 x 36 cm. All this allows radiation therapy of individual localizations with the virtually complete exclusion of the likelihood of an error during positioning, Obrubov said.

"Torus" is intended for the treatment of neoplasms of various nosologies and localizations by remote radiation therapy. The model will be created according to the principle of computed tomography devices - with a toroidal or tunnel workspace.

The volume of investments in the project was not disclosed. It is only known that it is being implemented in cooperation with the Institute of Rosatom State Corporation , Science and Innovation JSC[1]
