2023: Russia will begin to prepare media centers

In Russia, for the first time, a training program was launched for media professionals who identify extremist and destructive materials on the Internet. This direction of undergraduate studies appeared in the RANEPA. The initiative is justified, since the volume of such content in social networks and instant messengers is constantly growing - only over the past six months there have been 16% more such materials. This was announced on November 9, 2023 by the press service of the State Duma deputy RFAnton Nemkin.

2022: Putin signs law setting up extremist data bank

In mid-July 2022, the president Russia Vladimir Putin signed a law creating a bank of data extremist materials in the country. Copies of court decisions on recognition information as extremist, as well as the materials themselves with it, will be entered into this system.

Officials of bodies engaged in countering extremist activities will have access to them. The data bank will be maintained by the Ministry of Justice of the Russian Federation, it will also determine the procedure for using the data bank. The law provides that information materials recognized as extremist by a court decision are sent to the Ministry of Justice of the Russian Federation. In addition, the law provides for the creation of a register with data on those citizens who are involved in the activities of extremist organizations.

Putin signed a law on the creation of a bank of extremist materials

Information about an individual who was the founder, member of a collegial governing body, head, deputy head, head of a regional or other structural unit, deputy head of a regional or other structural unit, participant, member, employee of an extremist or terrorist organization or other person whose involvement in the activities of an extremist or terrorist organization is established by a court decision that has entered into legal force shall be included in the unified register.

Earlier, Vladimir Putin signed a law introducing a temporary ban on being elected to elected positions for persons involved in organizations that are recognized by the court as extremist or terrorist. According to the document, the founders and leaders of extremist or terrorist organizations will not be able to apply for elected positions within five years from the date of the court's decision to ban or liquidate them, and employees of such organizations and persons whose involvement in their activities is established by the court for three years.[1]
