In early August 2022, the airline United Airlines made a deposit to Archer Aviation in the amount of $10 million on the eve of the delivery of 100 electric air taxis with the possibility of vertical takeoff and landing.
Earlier, United Airlines agreed to order up to 200 Archer flying taxis that would take travelers to the airport quickly, safely and with minimal environmental impact. The transaction amount is about $1 billion, with the possibility of purchasing aircraft worth another $500 million.
{{quote 'When the aircraft is commissioned... United Airlines, together with Mesa Airlines, will purchase a fleet of up to 200 of these electric aircraft. They will be managed by a partner company. eVTOL developers build their devices in a single system with ground infrastructure, regulatory framework... We believe that eVTOL aircraft have the potential to help achieve carbon neutral travel and serve as an innovative new tool, "said United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby. }} Archer intends to launch air taxi production in 2023 and begin its first commercial flights in 2024. It is assumed that aircraft on a single charge will be able to overcome about 100 km at a speed of 240 km/h. It is assumed that future models will be designed for longer trips at a higher speed.
United Airlines estimates the Archer eVTOL plane could cut CO2 emissions by 47% per passenger when traveling between Hollywood and Los Angeles International Airport, one of the first cities where Archer plans to launch its fleet. The investment in Archer jets comes as United Airlines management has set a goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.[1]
