2022: Orni System Development

Holding "Roselectronics" State Corporation Rostec has developed an ornithological flight safety system for airports - Orni. It is capable of tracking the flight of up to 100 birds simultaneously at a distance of up to 21 km. The equipment successfully passed the test operation at Pulkovo Airport in St. Petersburg. Roselectronics announced this on August 5, 2022.

Orni includes a radar detection and tracking subsystem equipped with one to four passive coherent locators, as well as an interfacing subsystem with bioacoustic emitters and other devices that scare off birds that find themselves in a flight-threatening zone. The devices do not interfere and do not affect the operation of radio equipment of aircraft and airports.

The complex received software that records and archives all bird flights, as well as monitors the operation of subsystems and exchanges information with other airport services. All Orni work is carried out in automatic mode.

As part of Rostec, the development is carried out by the enterprise of the holding "Roselectronics" - the Research Institute "Vector."

{{quote'According to the International Civil Aviation Organization, more than 5,000 aircraft collisions with birds occur in the world every year. In almost half of cases, birds get into the engine, after which the plane has to return to the airport. Our system tracks bird flights near the airport with high accuracy and scares them off during take-offs and landings of aircraft, "said Andrey Sorokin, director of commercial activities at the Vector Research Institute. }}

The Orni system plans to install Domodedovo Airport. The introduction of the system is supposed to be implemented in 2022 simultaneously with the commissioning of the reconstructed runway (runway-2), according to a message published on August 10, 2022 in the Telegram channel of the Rostec state corporation.
