2023: Growth of Russia's share in the strawberry market to 6%

The volume of the global strawberry consumption market in 2023 reached 900 thousand tons, of which Russia accounted for about 6% of supplies. This was reported in mid-April 2024 to RIA Novosti with reference to the data of the UN platform Comtrade and national statistics services of other countries.

Most strawberries in 2023 were delivered to the United States: they accounted for 267 thousand tons, slightly less than a third (30%) of the total mass of global imports. The second line was taken by Germany with a result of 114 thousand tons, the third - Canada with 108 tons of tons. Russia is located with the supply of 51 thousand tons of strawberries at the end of 2023.

The volume of the global strawberry consumption market in 2023 reached 900 thousand tons

Most strawberries to other countries in 2023 were supplied by Spain (247 thousand tons, or 27% of the world export of this berry), Mexico (185 thousand tons) and the United States (152 thousand tons). The supply of Spanish strawberries abroad in 2023 sank by 14%. The top five also included Greece (75 thousand tons) and the Netherlands (62 thousand tons). Turkey, which is the main supplier of strawberries to the Russian market, sold 38 thousand tons on the international market in 2023.

According to forecasts, by Rosselkhozbank 2026, strawberry production Russia in will grow by an average of 5% per year due to the implementation of investment projects - both greenhouse and processing berries. Only a quarter of all berries consumed by Russians in fresh form are brought from abroad. 2021: Global fresh fruit sales rise 9% for the year

In 2021, about 753 million tons of fresh fruits were sold around the world, which is 9% higher than the market size in 2017, when it came to a figure of 691 million tons. This is stated in a study that BusinessStat analysts announced in August 2022.

The report looked at the following fruits:

  • Pineapples
  • Oranges
  • Bananas
  • Grapefruits
  • Guayava, mango and mangostan, or garcinia
  • Pears
  • Melons and watermelons
  • Fig
  • Kiwi
  • Lemons and limes
  • Tangerines and similar citrus hybrids
  • Papaya
  • Peaches, nectarines
  • Plums
  • Dates
  • Apples

Global fresh fruit sales up 9%

In 2017-2021. the largest share in sales of fresh fruits in the world was in melons and watermelons, bananas, apples, oranges, as well as guaiyava, mango and mangostan (or garcinia). According to BusinesStat, in 2021, 130 million tons of melons and watermelons, 119 million tons of bananas, 87 million tons of apples, 76 million tons of oranges, 56 million tons of guayava, mango and mangostan were sold in the world.

It is noted that the share of bananas in the total sales volume was quite stable and on average over the five-year period was 15.8%. The same can be said for guaiyava, mango and mangostan, whose average share in sales averaged 7.4% of total sales. At the same time, the share of other popular types of fruits gradually decreased: the share of melons and watermelons in total sales of fresh fruits decreased over the five-year period from 17.8% to 17.3%, apples - from 11.7% to 11.6%, oranges - from 10.3% to 10.1%. This indicates an increase in consumer interest in new, still unusual types of fruits

According to experts, sales of fresh fruits in 2017-2021. increased annually. A long-term contributing factor to their growth is the increasing popularity of healthy lifestyles and consumer awareness of the benefits of fresh fruit.[2]
