MegaFon: VoWiFi (Voice over Wi-Fi)

VoWiFi, or Voice over Wi-Fi, is an Internet call technology. It uses a Wi-Fi router as a base station for calls and improves sound quality:

• where the net does not catch well;
• on the upper and basement floors of buildings;
• in new residential buildings and areas with dense buildings;
• in houses surrounded by a forest park zone.

VoWiFi works in the coverage area of ​ ​ a Wi-Fi router. When exiting the Wi-Fi zone, the user will automatically call and receive calls on the available 2G, 3G or LTE mobile network.

2022: Implementation in all regions of the country

On September 6, 2022, MegaFon announced the introduction of Voice over Wi-Fi technology equipment in all regions of the country. With its help, subscribers can make and receive regular voice calls via Wi-Fi wherever the penetration of the cellular network signal is difficult.

The appearance of Voice over WiFi (VoWiFi) is especially relevant for new residential complexes, where there are still not enough base stations for high-quality network coverage, basements and other places difficult to reach for a cellular signal.

The technology allows you to use any Wi-Fi router with Internet access as a base station and improves the quality of a voice call for a subscriber by using modern voice codecs Enhanced Voice Service and WB-AMR in MegaFon's network. Thanks to these codecs, the voice sounds as clear as if the interlocutor is nearby.

Launch of VoWiFi MegaFon began in 2020 from Moscow. Within two years, the technology became available to residents of other regions of the country.

We continue to implement the most current technological solutions for our subscribers. In 2021, we launched the federal VoLTE network, with the help of which users make calls with crystal clear sound via mobile Internet. Our network is built in such a way that the smartphone automatically chooses the best wireless communication technology depending on the location: it can be a familiar voice connection, a connection using mobile Internet in VoLTE, or, if the subscriber is in a place difficult to reach for a cellular signal, VoWiFi. VoWiFi runs on more than 450 models, smartphones including,,,, and Apple Samsung Xiaomi Huawei Realme other manufacturers. To use the service, you must smartphone be connected to a Wi-Fi network with Internet access, and the VoWiFi function is activated in the device settings.

The use of the technology does not affect the cost of services, calls over VoWiFi spend minutes from packages at the rate. Connection is possible with subscribers of any operators.
