2022: Raspberry Pi OS 2022-09-06 (Raspbian) searchable by name of installed programs

The developers of the Raspberry Pi project have published an update to the Raspberry Pi OS 2022-09-06 (Raspbian) distribution based on the Debian package base. Three assemblies have been prepared for download - an abbreviated (338 MB) for server systems, with a basic desktop (891 MB) and a complete one with an additional set of applications (2.7 GB). The distribution comes with a custom PIXEL environment (an offshoot of LXDE). About 35 thousand packages are available for installation from repositories. This became known on September 7, 2022.

In the updated release:

  • The application menu provides the ability to search by the names of installed programs, which simplifies navigation using the keyboard - the user can call up the menu by pressing the Windows key, then immediately start a set of masks for searching and after receiving a list of applications corresponding to the request, select the desired one with the cursor keys.
  • The panel has separate indicators for controlling the volume and sensitivity of the microphone (a common indicator was previously offered). Right-clicking displays lists of available audio input and output devices.
  • An updated software interface for controlling the camera is proposed - a Picamera2, which is a high-level binding over the libcamera library in Python.
  • Updated keyboard combinations are offered: Ctrl-Alt-B to open the Bluetooth menu and Ctrl-Alt-W to open the Wi-Fi menu.

  • Compatibility with the NetworkManager network configurator is provided, which can now be used as an option to configure a wireless connection instead of the standard background process dhcpcd. By default, dhcpcd remains, but in the future it is planned to switch to NetworkManager, which offers many additional useful features, such as VPN support, the ability to create a wireless access point and connect to wireless networks with hidden SSID. You can switch to NetworkManager in the advanced settings section of the raspi-config Raspberry Pi configurator[1].
