2022: Announcement of an android robot that naturally reacts to the laughter of the interlocutor

In mid-September 2022, artificial intelligence was announced at Kyoto University in Japan to teach robots the right laughter and the ability to distinguish laughter from piercing screeching.

Eric's robot was created in the hope of making the conversation more natural. According to scientists, they consider one of the important functions of conversational AI to be empathy.

Creating a model of shared laughter, the researchers used AI to help detect laughter, decide whether to laugh as well as what kind of laughter would be best. To test the system, four short two to three-minute dialogues between real people and the android robot Erica were used, which showed good results. However, according to experts, there is still a lot of work to be done to create truly natural laugh situations.

{{quote 'The conversation, of course, is multimodal, not just the right answer. Therefore, we decided that one of the ways in which the robot can empathize with users is to share their laughter, which cannot be done with a text chat bot. Robots should have their character, and we believe they can show that through their conversational behaviors, such as laughter, gaze, gestures and speech style. We do not think that this is an easy problem, and it may be more than 10-20 years before we can easily communicate with the robot as a friend, "said Koji Inoue, associate professor at Kyoto University in the Faculty of Intellectual Sciences and Technology. }}

An android robot is a humanoid robot that functions thanks to a synthetic body with an electronic brain system. At the same time, there can be various organs of real people in the body of the robot, which are not inferior in appearance or functionality to the present. According to scientists, the gynoid is a humanoid robot-woman and in fact, it is the same Android that belongs to the female sex.[1]
