2022: Start of chip production

At the end of September 2022, for the first time, the Vietnamese company began producing chips. We are talking about the FPT Semiconductor group, which has launched the production of semiconductor chips for medical devices.

According to Reuters, citing a statement from FPT Semiconductor, by 2023 the company intends to supply 25 million chips worldwide and considers Japan, Taiwan, China and the United States as key markets for its products. It is planned to produce microcircuits for telecommunications and automotive equipment, consumer electronics, energy devices and Internet of Things devices.

The news agency on September 28, 2022 noted that global semiconductor manufacturers in recent years have been betting on the Southeast Asian country, which is already a major regional manufacturing center, as an alternative to China. Particular attention is planned to be paid to the Asia-Pacific region, which by September 2022 accounts for 60% of global chip sales and which have an important role in the development of technologies such as artificial intelligence, 5G networks and self-driving cars, according to a press release from FPT Semiconductor.

Samsung said it will start making semiconductor chips in Vietnam in July 2023 after earlier in 2022 it invested $920 million in its plant in northern Tai Nguyen province. In 2021, Intel increased investment in chips in Vietnam by almost 50%.

According to the research company Technavio, which was released in August 2022, the total production of chips in Vietnam could grow to $1.65 billion by 2025.[1]
