NetApp implemented Netapp FAS3140 system for the engineering center ECAR

The engineering center ECAR (Engineering Center of Airbus in Russia) specializing in aircraft industry implemented NetApp FAS3140 storage system for performance improvement, administration process optimization and also for the purpose of reduction of total cost of ownership. The engineering center ECAR increased the volume of available disk space for placement of constantly growing volume of user data and created conditions for development of new projects.

In the course of use of ECAR of a storage system of other producer information volume regularly increased, and before the leaders of the center there was a problem of expansion of volume of disk space. New projects required increase in capacity of arrays. Purchase of a new storage system or acquisition of additional disks and implementation of the accompanying options in already existing DWH could become the solution of this problem.

Other problem was connected with specifics of administration system of a data storage device which are processed by ECAR. The company at the same time requires the general access to files under the NFS and CIFS protocols. To users and the user programs for work stable and fast functioning of both types of services is very important.

"After making decision on purchase of a new storage system we carried out the analysis of the producers and technologies optimum suitable for achievement of our purposes — Evlakhov Nikolay, the director of information technology of ECAR tells. — We compared NetApp FAS3140 and DWH of other producer. As a result for benefit of NetApp played existence of own implementation of NFS and CIFS protocols, i.e. purchase of the separate server for providing access under the CIFS and NFS protocols was not required. Also the device has flexibility (NAS & SAN) and a rich set of options and technologies". Thus, the ECAR company stopped the choice on solution Netapp FAS3140.

Process of implementation of DWH began with testing of the solution close on a configuration to planned which was carried out by employees of IT of a command of the engineering center with active support of specialists of the Russian department of Netapp. Setup of a system, check of work of key services was carried out and the most effective method of its use in the conditions of the existing infrastructure is defined. After a test stage the ECAR company purchased DWH and was engaged in its implementation jointly with specialists of Netapp.

"With buying solution from NetApp all obligations for placement and providing data passed to DWH that optimized administration process. Moreover, a number of processes within the existing IT of infrastructure, requires less time for implementation now. And thanks to deduplication of user data (house directories, current directories), we receive in addition from 12% to 30% of disk space depending on data type on the specific file system" — Igor Zhidkov, the administrator of the Unix systems of ECAR company comments.
