2022: Soft Tissue Elastic Implant Announcement

On October 18, 2022, Tomsk State University (TSU) announced the creation of soft tissue implants (skin, muscles, internal organs) from titanium nickelide.

According to the press service of the university, superelastic, hyperelastic structures have been created that solve one of the most important tasks of reconstructive surgery - the replacement of soft tissue defects resulting from injuries, acquired diseases, congenital pathologies.

In Tomsk, developed elastic implants for soft tissues

Implants are made of titanium nickelide and represent a metal-resistance mesh. The wire thickness is 60-90 micrometers, and its superelasticity allows the structure to deform and recover in a dynamic physiological environment.

Such implants must behave when moving like native tissues, that is, deform and restore their original shape and withstand even physiological loads. The maximum deformation of the titanium nickelide wire was up to 8%, while for most existing metal medical materials it reaches only 0.2% and they can only be used under static load conditions.

{{quote 'The need to replace, repair or maintain soft tissues in patients arises in different situations, for example, in cancer patients after the removal of malignancies. We are talking about defects in different soft tissues - skin, muscles, walls of blood vessels, tendons, ligaments, internal organs, - explained Gulsharat Baigonakov, senior researcher at TSU. }} The studies were supported by a megagrant of the Russian Federation. The next phase of implant research will focus on bioscience compatibility in cell culture studies. Laboratory animals will also be involved. Also, scientists will arrange research in several medical institutions in Tomsk.[1]
