Launch of polyether ether ketone for microelectronics for ₽300 million

Russia has put into operation the first domestic plant for the production of polyether ether ketone - a high-tech polymer for microelectronics and other critical industries. The production complex was created on the basis of the Engineering Chemical and Technological Center (IHTZ) at Tomsk State University (TSU) with a total investment of about ₽300 million. Previously, this material was completely purchased abroad, which created dependence on imports in strategic sectors of the economy. The launch of production took place on September 3, 2025.

According to TASS, the project is aimed at replacing critical material for domestic industry. Polyether ether ketone is a universal engineering plastic with a polycrystalline structure, having resistance to high temperatures up to + 250 degrees Celsius. The material retains excellent chemical, mechanical and electrical properties when exposed to water vapor and aggressive media.

The country's first production of polyester ether ketone for microelectronics was launched in Russia for ₽300 million

IHTZ Director Alexei Knyazev noted that this is the first Russian project of this scale in the field of import substitution of polymer materials. PEEK is used in microelectronics, cable industry, mechanical engineering, automotive industry, oil, gas and pharmaceutical industries. The unique properties of the polymer make it indispensable for the production of high-tech products.

The technological basis of the project is the patented synthesis technique developed by the Plastics Institute JSC. The initiative to create domestic production of PEEK came from the Ministry of Industry and Trade at the request of the Chuvashkabel plant. The enterprise needs a material for the manufacture of a heat-resistant cable capable of withstanding temperature loads and exposure to aggressive media with a minimum thickness of the insulation layer.[1]

Start-up of hydrogen bromide, which is used in chip cleaning

In August 2025, the Engineering Chemical and Technological Center at Tomsk State University (TSU) commissioned the first production line in Russia for high-purity hydrogen bromide - a chemical compound necessary for the production of semiconductor products and cleaning microchips. The company produces products with a purity level of 99.999% and a planned annual volume of 650 kg, which will fully cover the internal needs of Russian microelectronics manufacturers.

According to TASS, the center's specialists have gone from laboratory research to full-fledged production in a year and a half in conditions of extremely tight deadlines. The company received a safety certificate for chemical products from the information and analytical center "Safety of substances and materials" of the standardization institute, which is necessary for the official production and sale of the product.

The capacity of the train can be scaled depending on market demand. This ensures a stable supply of ultra-clean HBr to the Russian market and completely closes domestic needs, reducing dependence on imported suppliers from China and Europe.

The project manager Asya Vodyankina emphasized the critical importance of the purity of the substance for microelectronic production. According to her, the presence of even trace impurities can disrupt the operation of equipment or stop the production process in microelectronics.

A special challenge was the development of an analytical control system, which was previously absent in Russia. A team of young specialists on the basis of the laboratory of physical and chemical methods of analysis of TSU created and certified methods for determining critical impurities - hydrogen chloride, water, metals.[2]

Launch of NICA Super Collider Equipment Development School

In mid-May 2025, the school "Statistics for Physicists" was launched at Tomsk State University (TSU), designed to train specialists developing equipment for the Russian super collider NICA. The project is implemented at the expense of a megagrant allocated by the Russian government and is aimed at training scientists in various methods of mathematical statistics to assess the correctness of physical models when analyzing data.

According to the press service of Tomsk State University, the school's program includes lectures and master classes in several key areas: "Features of the construction and testing of statistical hypotheses," "Organization and launch of calculations on a computing cluster under the control of HTCondor," "Consideration of statistical models applicable to LHC data analysis" and other thematic blocks.

A school for developers of NICA super collider equipment was opened in Tomsk at the expense of a government megagrant

School teacher, employee of the laboratory for analyzing high-energy physics data at TSU Maxim Penzin stressed that statistics methods are necessary not only for analyzing experimental data, but also for creating measuring equipment with which this data will be obtained. As part of a project supported by a megagrant, researchers model detectors and electronics for a super collider, and solving such problems is impossible without a deep understanding of mathematical statistics algorithms.

These tools are especially important for scientists who will directly participate in experiments at the NICA collider. Megacyenne level settings produce huge amounts of data that inevitably contain distortions due to the influence of many factors. This creates the need for careful analysis and processing of information, for which mathematical statistics methods are used.[4]
