Surgeons at the Spanish Gregorio Marañon clinics use a modified augmented reality glasses-based system. The displays of transparent glasses display the results of CT and X-ray, as well as auxiliary information: medical history, data from the patient's monitor. Thanks to the form factor of glasses, doctors are not distracted, and their hands remain free. It is noteworthy that the glasses also, using the built-in camera, record what is happening and broadcast the video stream to monitors for training interns.

2017: Use for video broadcasts of operations in neurosurgery

On June 7, 2017, Nokia announced the world's first direct video broadcast of neurosurgical surgery in augmented reality format. The Helsinki University Central Hospital (HUH) became a partner of the Finnish company in this project.

The operation was shot on Nokia OZO panoramic cameras and broadcast through the Nokia OZO Live Internet service. Additionally, an interactive microscope and other informative graphics were displayed on the screen.

Nokia held the world's first broadcast of neurosurgery in augmented reality

Usually, about 10-15 observers fit in the operating rooms, in addition to doctors and nurses involved in the operation. Video broadcasting through Nokia OZO Live provides a virtual presence of any person in the operating room wherever they are, said Professor Mika Niemela, head of the Department of Neurosurgery at Helsinki University Central Hospital. During the first use of this technology, about 100 neurosurgeons were connected to the operation.
