Plot

The era of the XVIII century. this is an era of continuous symbolism in art, allegorism in the spirit of fable or ancient mythology, and in the case of this opera - in the spirit of Russian epics and fairy tales, in order to bring the understanding of the plot as close as possible to historical reality. Catherine II changed the plot of the epic. Its main characters are the Dowager Novgorod Princess Amelfa Timofeevna and her son, Prince and fist fighter Vasily Boeslaevich, who forces him to submit to the Novgorod nobility and obsequiously bow before the autocracy.

Vaska has two comrades of fist fighters - Fomka and Potanyushka who help him defeat Novgorodians in fist fights, and persuade them to obey. According to some estimates, the plot reflects the role of the three Orlov brothers in organizing the palace coup and bringing to power Catherine II, who during these events became a dowager like Amelfa Timofeevna.

Fist fighter and Prince Vasily Boeslaevich whose nickname has been changed and is now interpreted as "glorifying the battle" of the apparently famous fist of St. Petersburg, serving the "mother empress." This is a man whose many poets of that time sang in odes, or ironic-comic poetry - allegorically. Music

Composer Fomin very freely approached the interpretation of the literary source, in many ways rethought it. As B. Dobrokhotov suggests, "Fomin's deeply folk music did not like Catherine, and the composer was recognized as a person who did not like the court."
