2022: Gas Turbine Engine Improvement Method

On December 16, 2022, the press service PNIPU announced that scientists Perm Polytechnic they had improved the operation of gas-turbine the engines. For efficient operation of the gas turbine combustion chambers, power stations which are actively used for generation electricity and heat power, it is necessary to heat the fresh gas-air mixture to the ignition temperature throughout the process. If gas there is little in the mixture and there is a lot of air, burning is unstable and almost impossible. Perm Polytechnic scientists have proposed a combined way to raise the temperature of the fuel before it is fed into the combustion chamber. The technology will allow the installation to spontaneously emit a large amount of heat and without electric power causing harm. In ecology addition, the development will reduce the dimensions of the equipment and at the same time increase the service life and efficiency of its operation.

To increase the completeness of combustion, methods are used based on changing the temperature or amount of air that is supplied to the combustible mixture. But they can lead to undesirable consequences, for example, to a decrease in the efficiency of a gas turbine plant and a decrease in its life. Scientists propose to organize heating of the mixture in a heat exchanger, which will be heated by gases from the turbine,
reported graduate student of the Department of Rocket and Space Technology and Energy Systems Alena Shilova.

For a stable flame position in the combustion chambers of gas turbine power plants, it is necessary to organize additional heating up to 726 - 926 degrees Celsius due to additional air, or due to additional heating of fuel gas, or due to simultaneous heating of both components.
explained Associate Professor of the Department of Rocket and Space Technology and Energy Systems of the Perm Polytechnic, Candidate of Technical Sciences Nikolai Bachev.

According to the developers, low-temperature combustion will help simplify the design of the turbine (excluding turbine cooling, it is necessary for high-temperature combustion). The development will be useful for implementation at oil and gas enterprises. This method is suitable for open, closed and combined terrestrial systems.
