At the end of January 2023, the Swiss transport company Krummen Kerzers tested a battery electric truck for long-haul transportation. The trip took seven days, whereas on a diesel semi-trailer it would take four days.
The Volvo FH Electric semi-trailer, weighing 40-tons, traveled 3 thousand km between Zurich, Switzerland, and Valencia, Spain - this is the largest distance traveled by a commercial electric truck on January 31, 2023. The Swiss logistics company made a round trip.
The driver, Balint Schnell, picked up 20 tons of oranges for the Casa del Mas grocery store in Küsnacht on Lake Zurich from a store in Canals, near Valencia. The driver of the electric truck was driving a semi-truck for the first time, so he had to familiarize himself with the car, study the route in detail and plan everything in advance. Balint Schnell had to stick to the EU's driving and rest times, so he stopped about 20 times and had to carefully schedule his charging times to match the breaks.
The website Volvo says that the range of the FH Electric 4×2 semi-trailer is up to 300 km. Krummen Kerzers' chosen route for January 2023 is not yet designed to charge electric semi-trailers, so Balint Schnell had to be charged at regular EV stations.
Peter Krummen, one of the leaders of Krummen Kerzers, spoke about the decisive factor for Krummen Kerzers is that this trip gained important knowledge about the use of electronic trucks in long-distance communication and saved almost 3 tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions.
At Krummen, Kerzers plans to invest in electric truck charging infrastructure at its office in Kerzers, Switzerland, as well as three other locations in the country. The company's management also wants to increase its fleet of electric trucks from Volvo to 18 units by the end of 2023.[1]
