Valencia (city)

A city in Spain on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea.

Content

The largest city in the Autonomous Community of Valencia. Located in the province of Valencia.

Geography

Distances from Valencia to major cities in Spain

Geographically, the city of Valencia is located in the very center of the bend of the coastline of the Gulf of Valencia, in a valley bounded on both sides by the rivers Turia and Hukar (Júcar) and remote from mountain ranges.

Hukar River Channel

Valencia is located in a zone of moderate seismic activity. During her history, she experienced tremors several times, the last of which was recorded on September 16, 2003 and had a magnitude of 4.2 on the Richter scale. In 1823 and in 1904, the city experienced tremors of 5 points. Given these natural risks, seismic-resistant[1] of[1] are being built in the region].

Changes in the area of Lake Albufera, which is located in the city, as of 2020

Population

The population of Valencia as of January 1, 2019 was 794,288 people.

According to the census conducted in Spain in 2011, the city of Valencia had 798,033 inhabitants.

At the same time, the total number of all residents of the Huerta de Valencia zone is 1,774,201 (INE 2011), including those living in municipalities such as:

  • Torrente (83.457),
  • Paterna (61.941),
  • Mislata (43.740),
  • Burjassot (37.667).

13.9% of the total number registered in municipalities have foreign citizenship (INE 2011). A large percentage are immigrants from South America (40.3%), Europe (30.9%), Africa (18.3%), Asia (11.3%) and the countries of the former USSR (5.2%)[2].

Economy

The economy of Valencia is very closely connected with political events, both in the life of the city itself and in Spain as a whole. The years of Franco's rule, with their pressure of international isolation and boycott, prevented either businesses or the leisure industry from developing. There were years when unemployment in the city reached 45% among young people under 25. Since 1970, when Valencia entered a period of active growth in industrial production, the share of agricultural products has decreased from 28% to 19% (approximately 2011).

Companies operating in Valencia:

Port

Port of Valencia - in 2017, one of the three largest container ports in the Mediterranean Sea. The areas adjacent to the port within a radius of 350 km account for almost 50% of Spain's GDP. The port serves the metropolitan area and the entire Iberian Peninsula, with the potential for development as the largest transhipment hub in the Western Mediterranean.

2017: China's Cosco acquires control of container terminal

On June 13, 2017, the Chinese holding COSCO SHIPPING PORTS (CSP) acquired a 51% stake in Noatum Port Holdings, whose assets include two container terminals in the ports of Valencia and Bilbao and railway terminals in Madrid and Zaragoza, for 200 million euros.

NCTV is the largest container terminal in the port of Valencia. The deal is part of infrastructure development in China's Belt and Road program.

Power

2022: Valencia cemeteries to be turned into Spain's largest urban solar park

Valencia City Council is set to turn its cemeteries into Spain's largest urban solar park, providing power to up to 1,000 homes.

On October 31, 2022, the council said that about 7,000 panels would be installed on the roofs of all cemeteries in the city. Cemetery adviser Alejandro Ramon said the installation is part of the city's roadmap for a greener, more self-sufficient environment.

Valencia, which has been designated a European green city for 2024, will begin installing solar panels in November. The installations will generate about 2,800 megawatts and will be used by the council, as well as to help those in dire financial straits.

The value of the original solar park is reportedly around €3 million, with possible further installations on other municipal property in the near future.

The council is due to receive a €600,000 grant from the European Union following its appointment as the bloc's green city.

Districts of the city

This map marks large areas, which in turn are divided into smaller parts (below).

Official ranking of Valencia districts in 2013:

1. EIXAMPLE: The most elite zone (Russafa, El Pla Del Remei, Gran Vía)

Valencia's most elite zone is the district of Eixample (L'Eixample) or Ensanche. This area includes:

  • Rusafa,
  • Gran Via and
  • El Pla del Remei.

The latter is the most expensive and most prestigious. Rusafa is considered the most bohemian and cosmopolitan district of Valencia, and Gran Via is considered bourgeois and well-known. All three districts have excellent infrastructure - there is no shortage of shops, cafes or public transport.

2. QUATRE CARRERES (Montolivet, La Font d´En Corts, Malilla, La Fonteta de Sant Lluïs, Na Rovella, La Punta, Ciutat de les Arts i les Ciències)

3. CIUTAT VELLA: Old Town (La Seu, La Xerea, El Carme, El Pilar, El Mercat, Sant Francesc)

To be sure, Ciutat Vella will be a wonderful choice for tourists thanks to its wide range of hotels, countless cafes and restaurants, and the walking distance of all attractions. However, living in the Old Town for several months or more can become a dubious pleasure. There are few stores, and in those that are, not the most democratic prices are set. Noisy crowds of tourists also do not add comfort. Nevertheless, if you choose an apartment in a more secluded part of the Old City and be prepared for some everyday inconveniences, then the unique atmosphere of old Valencia more than compensates for all the shortcomings.

4. POBLATS MARÍTIMS: seaside zone (El Grau, El Cabanyal-El Canyamelar, La Malvarrosa, Beteró, Natzaret)

The greater Poblats Maritims district is divided into three smaller parts:

  • La Malvarrosa - the farthest from the center,
  • Cabanal in the middle and
  • Canamelar, adjacent to the yacht port.

All three districts stretch along the coast and boast excellent infrastructure: shops on each corner, grocery stores with fresh vegetables and fruits, bakeries, playgrounds, cafes and bars. A large number of buses and trams will allow you to quickly and easily reach almost anywhere[3] city[3].

On the seaside part of the Kanyamelar district called Las Arenas, along the boardwalk, a line of hotels of different categories lined up. If you are going to settle in Valencia for a longer period, then it makes sense to consider renting an apartment in the La Malvarossa area. This fairly simple residential area is far more respectable than neighbouring Kabanyal, with apartment rental prices very affordable here.

5. JESÚS (La Raiosa, Hort De Senabre, La Creu Coberta, Sant Marcel.lí, Cami Reial)

6. EXTRAMURS (El Botànic, La Roqueta, La Petxina, Arrancapins)

Extramurs is a good residential area with excellent infrastructure and elegant historical buildings.

7. EL PLA DEL REIAL: 19th and early 20th century buildings (Exposició, Mestalla, Rei Jaume, Ciutat Universitària)

El Pla Real is located close to the Old Town, so apartment rental prices here will be quite high. The housing stock is mainly historical buildings of the XIX and early XX centuries.

8. BENIMACLET (Benimaclet, Cami de Vera)

9. ALGIRÓS (L´Illa Perduda, Ciutat Jardí, L´Amistat, La Vega Baixa, La Carrasca)

10. CAMPANAR (Campanar, Tendetes, El Calvari, Sant Pau, Nou Campanar)

Campanar is perhaps the most green of all. In this part of the city is the picturesque landscape park of Cabezera and Biopark - Valencia Zoo. The green space is surrounded by modern houses, many of which were built in the last years of the 2000s. There are also grocery stores and a small shopping center, Carrefour Campanar. The only serious disadvantage is not very good transport links. This area of Valencia can only be reached by two modes of public transport - bus number 95 and by metro. The bus does not run very often, and there is only one metro station here.

11. PATRAIX (Patraix, Sant Isidre, Vara De Quart, Safranar, Favara)

12. CAMINS AL GRAU: A view of the City of Arts and Sciences (Aiora, Albors, La Creu Del Grau, Cami Fondo, Kenya-Roja)

The Camins al Grau district consists of two smaller zones:

  • El Grau and
  • Ayora.

The first adjoins the former channel of the Turia River, the second is slightly inland, closer to the Algiros region. The first is very pleasant and respectable, with a large number of new buildings and an international composition of residents. From here it is easy to get to the Old Town or even to walk there. It only takes you 15-20 minutes. Many homes have impressive views of the City of Arts and Sciences, as well as wide green boulevards along the Turia Gardens. The second district, Ayora, is much simpler - there is a lot of rather dilapidated housing and it is not recommended to consider it seriously.

13. RASCANYA (Orriols, Torrefiel, Sant Llorenç)

14. BENICALAP (Benicalap, Ciutat Fallera)

15. POBLATS DEL SUD (Forn d´Alcedo, Castellar-L´Oliveral, Pinedo, El Saler, El Palmar, El Perellonet, La Torre, Faitanar)

16. L'OLIVERETA (Nou Moles, Soternes, Tres Forques, La Fuensanta, La Llum)

17. LA SAIDIA (Marxalenes, Morvedre, Trinitat, Tormos, Sant Antoni)

18. POBLATS DEL NORD (Benifaraig, Poble Nou, Carpesa, Cases de Bàrcena, Mauella, Masarrojos, Borbotó)

19. POBLATS DE L´OEST (Benimàmet, Beniferri)

Beaches

Las Arenas

The closest to the city center and perhaps the most tourist is Las Arenas beach. From budget hostels to the luxury five-star Las Arenas Hotel, many hotels have concentrated on this small stretch of Valencia's coast. It also houses a large number of restaurants and bars for every taste and wallet.

La Malravarossa

Walking a little further along the Paseo Maritimo, you will find yourself on the beach of La Malravarossa - a favorite holiday destination for local residents.

Patacona

The most remote from the city center is Patacona Beach - quiet and sparsely populated. Here you can often find Spaniards kiting, or leisurely walking at the edge of the surf. The pearl of Patacona can be called a small section of the boardwalk, which adjoins the neighboring zone of La Malvarossa. A small plot of the historical development of the district has been preserved here - charming one-story villas painted in bright cheerful colors.

Also in Patacon is one of the cutest beach cafes in Valencia - La Mas Bonita, which makes excellent cocktails and delicious homemade cakes.

2022: Water temperature record

At the beginning of August 2022, a water temperature of 29.72 ºC was recorded on the Valencian coast, which is a historical record, exceeding the previous maximum temperature by more than 1 degree (28,65ºC, August 7, 2015).

2013: ABC newspaper's top eight beaches

In June 2013, the ABC newspaper compiled a list of the eight best beaches of Valencia[4].

1. L'Arbré del Gos

L'Arbre del Gos Beach is located near the dunes of Albufera Nature Park. It extends from the second breakwater of the sea embankment to El Saler Beach. Its length is 2,600 m. The beach opened to visitors in 2007 after work on its arrangement, as a result of which a pedestrian embankment and a bicycle path appeared. It is equipped with everything necessary for a pleasant pastime.

2. La Devesa

This beach is located in the Albufera Nature Park between the entrances to the Puchol and Perellonet harbors. Its length is almost 5 km. The landscape of the beach is extremely diverse, as well as its flora - pines, palm trees, stone oaks, mastic trees and honeysuckle grow here, in the branches of which various species of birds live. La Devesa Beach is one of the most carefully protected areas of Albufera Park, which allows it to preserve its natural resources.

3. La Garrofera

La Garrofera Beach, located in the dune area, was opened in 2007. Its length is 1,800 m. In terms of its characteristics, it resembles Saler Beach, with which it borders to the north. At its southern limit is the entrance to Puchol Harbor.

4. El Saler

Also located within Albufera Nature Park, this beach is an ideal destination for marine sports. Every year, fans of wind and kitesurfing, as well as other similar entertainment come here. El Saler Beach is located in the south of Valencia. It is bordered to the north by L'Arbré del Gos Beach and to the south by La Garrofera Beach. Dunes and pines protect the fine golden sand of this beach with a length of 2,700 m from the wind. El Saler is one of Valencia's most popular beaches.

5. La Malvarrosa

This city beach of Valencia is located in the northern part of the city limits, between the settlements of Alboraya and the street Asekia de la Cadena. Its length is 1,000 m, and its width is 135 m. It has everything you need for a pleasant rest. Among the most famous figures who once set foot on the fine sand of La Malvarros are the artist Joaquin Sorolla and the writer Vicente Blasco Ibáñez. There are many restaurants and cafes on the sea embankment. In addition, a special swimming area for people with disabilities is equipped on the beach.

6. Playa Cabañal

The city beach of El Cabagnal is also one of the most visited - both in the summer and in other seasons. It is located to the south of La Malvarrosa beach, has a length of about 1,200 m and a width of 197 m. For children on the small golden sands of the beach there are many entertainment and games, a large number of areas for beach sports. In addition, traditional restaurants are located nearby, where you can try the best rice in Valencia.

7. El Perellonet

El Perellonet Beach is located in the southern part of the city limits of Valencia. An extensive service area is equipped here, beyond which rice paddies extend. The length of the beach is more than 3 km, the width is about 66 m. Its borders are determined by the entrances to the harbors of Perellonet and Perello.

8. Pinedo

Pinedo beach has a length of about 1,500 m and an average width of 32 m. It is located south of the yacht club and the port of Valencia, which protect the beach from northern winds. It is located near the village of Pinedo, a traditional place for peasants and fishermen. The beach of the same name is equipped with all the necessary amenities. There are also restaurants and places for entertainment.

Parks

Valencia is one of the greenest cities in Spain. Valencians are rightly famous for their love of vegetation, so it is not surprising that such a relatively small city has a large number of green oases. Valencia parks are famous for their well-being and decorativeness, so walking through them can be a very pleasant addition to the main excursion program.

In addition to encircling the entire center of the Turia Gardens, Valencia also has several extensive central parks and a large park and entertainment area at the very end of the former Turia river bed, in the Campanar area.

Turia Gardens

If you look at the map of Valencia, the first thing that catches your eye is a wide green strip that cuts the city into two halves - the famous city gardens of Turia. The river of the same name once flowed at this place, but in 1957 the river showed burrows and flooded a good part of the city. The Spaniards did not forgive the betrayal and in 1986 adopted the so-called "Southern Plan," according to which the river was transferred to a new, safe place, and gardens were planted on the site of a 110-hectare desert channel and a huge park and leisure complex was organized.

Image:Сады Турия Валенсия 2013.jpg

The main pearl of the Gardens of Turia is the futuristic museum and entertainment complex City of Arts and Sciences, built in the late 1990s. It consists of 5 buildings:

  • Hemisferic Cinema,
  • Aquarium,
  • Prince Felipe Science Museum,
  • Umbrakle Covered Hallery and
  • Operas.

Another centre of attraction for the Turia Gardens was the unusual Gulliver Children's Entertainment Park, built in the form of the earth-spread giant Gulliver, whose body, equipped with paths and slides, serves as a playground for games.

Also in the Gardens of Turia is the modern concert hall Palace of Music and many sports grounds.

Not even all Valencia residents know that CaixaForum Valencia, located in the City of Arts and Sciences, has the largest vertical garden in Europe for 2022. It covers an area of 700 m ² and combines more than 20,000 plants.

This creation by botanical expert and urban landscape CEO Ignacio Solano, he said, was designed as an ever-changing piece of art that promotes better air quality. The garden adorns the entrance to the restaurant.

"The idea is to bring personality and present unique flora and microfauna, thereby creating a special atmosphere that will connect CaixaForum Valencia visitors with nature."

Montforte Gardens

A beautiful Romanticism-style park sheltered between residential and office buildings near General Elio Avenue. In Montforte Park you can see beautiful sculptural groups and fountains, walk through the green labyrinth and enjoy the peace and beauty of the cosy shady alleys[5] Valencia].

Royal Gardens (Los Viveros Gardens)

Not far from Montforte Gardens is the large city park Royal Gardens or Los Viveros Gardens. It houses a small menagerie with exotic animals and birds, a curious Natural History Museum, and a large and beautifully equipped playground.

Cabezera Park

A beautiful landscape park laid out at the farthest end of the Gardens of Turia, near the bridge on October 9 (Puente 9 de Octubre). There are many winding alleys for leisurely walks, a picturesque pond where you can rent a boat in the shape of a swan, a panoramic hill and a large playground for young visitors.

Valencia Biopark

A large modern zoo made in the concept of zoo immersion - immersion in the environment. There are no cages and enclosures in Biopark, and the area is as stylized as possible as the natural living conditions of animals.

Tallest tree

Eucalyptus is 41.2 meters high - for 2022, the tallest tree in the entire province of Valencia and ranks 4th in height in the Valencian Community. It grows near the Les Carolines metro station in the Benimamet subdistrict of Valencia, has a trunk with a diameter of 6.1 meters. According to experts, he is from 80 to 100 years old, and he is one of the trees protected by the Valencia City Council.

This giant is an Australian-born red or narrow-leaved eucalyptus of the myrtle family whose botanical name is Eucaliptus camaldulensis. To take a closer look at it, Parque Lineal Park must be bypassed. Its scale is such that tree specialists have to use lifting platforms and involve firefighters to produce pruning, infection treatment and other sanitation work.

Transport

Buses (EMT)

Empresa Municipal de Transportes de Valencia (EMT) - Municipal Enterprise of Transport of Valencia. It provides public transport services in Valencia and the suburbs. Bus routes are available on the website or through a mobile application for Android.

Bullfight

Despite the fact that you can still see the bullfighting in the city, by 2016 the Valencia government unanimously refused to issue permits and provide premises for the Bou Embolat event, during which fireballs cling to the horns of the bull. In addition, municipal subsidies for events involving these animals were canceled in the city, as well as funding for tauromachia schools[6]. TAdviser urges everyone not to attend bullfighting performances in any of their formats.

Crime

Valencia is a city with a high rate of theft. For 10 years of living in the Moscow-Valencia regime, the author of these lines had the following incidents:

  • stole a bicycle fastened near Las Arenas Beach (2016);
  • the thief entered the apartment during the long absence of tenants (2023);
  • a gang that trades in Turia Park stole a backpack (2024).

It is known that since at least 2021, multiple cases of theft from foreigners have been recorded in the park. In groups of Russians in Valencia in social networks a day later they wrote about the theft of mobile phones or bags in Turia Park. The police in such cases cannot or does not want to help in any way.

Gardeners mentioned that in January 2024 there was a case when in the evening a local employee of Cort Engles had her bag taken away when she was returning from work.

2021:17% increase in crime over five years

Valencia's overall crime rate rose 17.1% in 2021 compared to 2016, while the rate of crimes against sexual freedom soared 50%.

On 5.1%, the level of robbery with the use of violence and the 52.8% number of crimes related to injuries and fights has increased.

2020: The rise of thefts and robberies

In 2020, 12.2% of Valencia residents were at risk of severe material deprivation, the highest since 2012 and far from 4% in 2018.

Payment of medical services by foreigners

In June 2013, the Valencia Health Board installed 25 POS terminals that will allow foreign tourists to pay for the received medical care with bank cards. This payment system can be used by foreign guests who do not have health insurance in Spain.

Thus, foreign tourists who do not have a European sanitary card and the right to access the national health system will be able to pay for the services provided directly at the clinic to which they applied.

"The application of new mechanisms avoids bureaucratic delays, due to which the payment process slows down and becomes more expensive, as well as significantly simplify the issuance of international bills," say sources in the Health Council.

The pilot project is being implemented in several medical centers in Valencia. Its first phase, which consisted of installing the necessary software, was successfully completed. This application will allow the patient to write out an invoice for the services provided in his presence.

The second phase, testing of the payment system and POS terminals by administrative staff, is at the testing stage as of June 2013. Card payment devices operate in 25 medical centers - 6 in the province of Castellón, 3 in Valencia and 16 in Alicante.

It has created a completely new restaurant courtyard, an entertainment area and separately - a children's area with childcare services, a parking lot for 2500 seats, two floors of exhibition premises with furniture and household appliances for 6700 square meters each and a building materials store with an area of 8000 square meters. In addition to the usual interiors of living rooms, bedrooms, kitchens and bathrooms, it was in Valencia that the store managers made a special emphasis on the decoration of the veranda and garden, since the climate allows this, and such models will be in demand among local residents.

As for weekend work, the IKEA directorate has high hopes that the store will be allowed to do so. As of June 2014, they received a negative response from the municipality on this issue: the authorities allowed them to open only for 10 holidays a year.

In September 2016, the Ikea store launched a pilot program to sell furniture and decor items online in Valencia. The company begins to provide delivery for an additional fee, which will depend on the order amount. You can also pick up your order in the store yourself (cost 16 euros).

One of the first cities to order furniture from Ikea through the network was Alfafar in Valencia. In the future, from December 2016, it is planned to expand the provision of such services.

The offer covers the entire catalogue of goods, except textiles, countertops and Persian carpets. The minimum delivery cost is 55 euros. If the order is large and transported over a long distance, it increases. For example, to receive a purchase worth between €3001 and €4,500 at the farthest point on the delivery card, you must pay €283.

Free removal of old furniture - 010

In Valencia, you can't just take old furniture to the bins. You need to call 010 and agree on its free removal by contractors of the city authorities.

75 BC: Gnei Pompey destroys Valentia in the Sertorian War. City disappears

In 88 BC, a conflict broke out in Rome between Consul Lucius Cornelius Sulla and a party of Marians led by Quintus Sertorius. The parties competed for the right to lead the army in a campaign against Mithridates VI Yevpator.

Rome believed that the war against Mithridates would be quite easy, and the war in the rich provinces promised to extremely enrich the commander. It was also well known that Mithridates was very rich, and in the Greek cities that joined Mithridates there were a huge number of works of art that were already highly valued in Rome at the beginning of the 1st century.

Sulla had more rights to primacy, but the intrigues of his opponents forced him to seek command by capturing Rome. Extreme cruelty on both sides divided the Roman elite into two parties, which continued to fight each other during the Civil Wars and rebellions, including after the death of Sulla in 78 BC (the so-called war between the Marians and the Sullans (88-62 BC). One of the episodes of this conflict was the war of the Roman Senate against Sertorius, who became governor in Near Spain.

In 75 BC, Gnei Pompey, who commanded the Roman troops, crossed Iber, reached Valentia and here defeated the military leaders of Sertorius - Gerennius and Perperna. 10 thousand rebels died, including Herennius, and Valentia was taken and destroyed.

Gnaeus Pompey

In 73, Sertorius was killed by conspirators. This caused a split in the camp of the rebels and weakened them, thanks to which Gnei Pompey easily won the decisive battle.

138 BC: Roman veterans of campaign against Lusitans get lands in Valentia Edetanorum

At the time of the distribution of the provinces at the beginning of 138 BC. e., it was not yet known that the most dangerous enemy of Rome in those years, the leader of the Lusitans Viriat, the head of a large tribe in modern Portugal and western Spain, was killed. Therefore, the Senate decided once again to send one of the consuls to Far Spain; this province went to Decimus Junius Brutus, presumably on the basis of his agreement with his colleague. Later, when the news of the death of Viriat came to Rome, no one began to cancel Brutus's mission.

Decimus Junius continued the work of Cepion to settle on the new lands of the Lusitans in order to put an end to their raids. In particular, Brutus granted the settlers the colony of Valencia he founded and the lands around it. In historiography, there is no consensus on the identification of this city: it may be Valencia de Alcantara (located today near the border with Portugal in the province of Extremadura), Valencia del Guide or Valencia on the Migno River (northwest of the Iberian Peninsula). A number of researchers are inclined in favor of the first [7]

At the same time, other sources report that veterans of the campaign against the Lusitans received land in the East of Spain at Valentia Edetanorum, near Sagunt in the same 138 BC.

Titus Livius, quoted by the author of the 4th century, reported the foundation of this Valentia on the island of the Turia River, near the Heracles Road. The settlement was located between several ancient Iberian cities:: Arse (Sagunt), Edeta (Liria), Saetabis (Játiva) and Dianium (Denia).

Valentia quickly gained the status of a Roman colony.

2 BC: During the reign of Octavian Augustus, the road through the Iberian Peninsula, which received his name, is modernized

After the reign of the Roman emperor Octavian Augustus, when between 8 and 2 B.C.E., the Vía Exterior road, approximately 1,500 km long, was widened and improved, it was named after the emperor, the Augustow Road.

In Valencia, the remains of the August Road are preserved in two places in the city center: in the Almoina Museum next to the central cathedral and next to the Borgia Palace, which now houses the Cortes of the Autonomous Community of Valencia.

Also on San Vicente Street and Alameda Avenue, roadside poles were preserved, marking the distances on the road through each milliary (1.48 km).

IV-III centuries BC: Movements of people along the Hannibal road

The most ancient finds discovered on the territory of the city of Valencia are dated to the 4th and 3rd centuries BC. Objects were found in the area of Ruaya and Sagunto streets, in the place along which the Hannibalova road passed. This road was called Via Herculea or Via Heraclea (Herculean Road), Camino de Aníbal (Hannibalova Road) and Vía Exterior.

Among the finds are Iberian and Punic ceramics, amphorae from Ivisa, from Cadiz and northern Africa, a Carthaginian coin from the Barkid era, which confirms the presence of trade between the Iberians and the Carthaginians.

The founding of cities such as Valentia (Valencia), Saguntum (Sagunt), Lucentum (Alicante), Saetabis (Hativa), Ilici (Elche) is directly related to their original position by this ancient road.
