2022: Silk export growth by 119% to $400,000

In 2022, Russia delivered silk abroad in the amount of $400 thousand, which is 118.8% more than a year earlier. This is evidenced by the data of the Federal Customs Service (FCS), released in mid-March 2023.

According to the department's materials, silk imports to Russia increased by 39.3% compared to a year ago - to $6.2 million. At the same time, cotton exports in 2022 increased by 10%, to $71.1 million, and imports - by 27.4%, to $945.4 million.

Russia delivered silk abroad in the amount of $400 thousand.

In the first place in the import of silk to Russia is occupied, China which, although it has reduced by three times the export of silk to Russia in the period since 2014, but it has always occupied the first place in the list. On the second line is located, Italy which also lost its position in the Russian market due to sanctions, but still for the year already occupies the second line with about a million tons of silk per year imported to Russia.

The third line is occupied by Belarus, which over the past six years has greatly increased the export of silk to Russia. India and Britain occupy the third position in the export of silk to the country. Uzbekistan closes the list, which has significant opportunities to export silk, but due to lack of investment, the country is still engaged only in the export of raw cotton and cotton fabrics.

One of the features of the production of silk fabrics in Russia is that traditional Russian manufacturers of silk fabrics, as a rule, specialize in the mass production of other types of products. For example, the Rakhman Silk Plant is a monopolist in Russia for the production of sieve fabrics from polyamide, and the old Shchelkovskaya Silk Weaving Factory is engaged in the production of technical fabrics produced exclusively from artificial raw materials.[1]
