2023: Product Announcement

The largest film distributor in Russia, Central Partnership (TsPSh, part of Gazprom-Media), has developed a new cinema format, which is similar in characteristics to the popular IMAX. The new technology was called Cosmax, the company's CEO Vadim Vereshchagin said at the end of March 2023.

According to him, Cosmax combines the clearest and most rich image, as well as deep and detailed sound. The first film to be shown in this format will be the film "Challenge" by Klim Shipenko, partially shot in space.

Vereshchagin estimated the cost of Cosmax at about 5 million rubles. He also clarified that a high-quality digital projector and sound equipment are needed to show films in the new format. The general director of Central Partnership also spoke about some of the technical requirements for filming for further display in Cosmax.

To convert the footage to Cosmax, the picture must initially be shot in high resolution, with a certain framing. Cosmax will be able to support any open format. But the maximum quality will be achieved only when showing a picture shot in this format, - he said in a conversation with Vedomosti.

According to Svetlana Mudrova, senior analyst at Nevafilm Research, Cosmax's demand will depend not only on the existing infrastructure, but also on the availability of suitable content at the box office.

Denis Baglai, general director of Art Pictures Studio, believes that the demand for the premium format has already developed for a certain part of the audience visiting cinemas. On average, IMAX accounted for up to 10% of the total box office receipts of a film released in this format. The Cosmax format may be in demand from producers, Baglai suggests.[1]
