Performance indicators
2021: Income growth by 22% to 121 billion rubles
On March 18, 2022, Gazprom-Media Holding shared its consolidated financial performance under IFRS for the twelve months of 2021 compared to 2020.
Consolidated revenues of Gazprom-Media Holding grew by 22% and reached 121 billion rubles due to an increase in advertising revenues and income from the sale of rights to audio-video playback. The holding's net profit exceeded 3 billion rubles against a net loss of 5.5 billion rubles in 2020. Gazprom-Media Holding's operating profit reached 3.1 billion rubles. The positive operating and financial results are due to the effective management of consolidated expenses, the growth of which does not exceed income growth.
Advertising revenues amounted to 90.7 billion rubles, which is 25% more than a year earlier. The growth was ahead of the pace of the entire Russian advertising market, which, according to the Association of Communication Agencies of Russia (AKAR), increased by 22% in 2021. Gazprom-Media broadcast TV channels, Red Media thematic TV channels and GPM Match sports channels made a significant contribution to the dynamics of the company's advertising revenues. In particular, the start of the prime minister and projects on the holding's TV channels at the end of the third quarter had an impact. The dynamics was also positively influenced by the twofold growth in advertising revenue in the digital environment.
In general, the growth of advertising revenues is due to the recovery of business activity in the advertising market.
Revenues from the sale of rights to audio-video playback increased by 25% and reached 16.8 billion rubles. Growth was provided by revenues from distributions thematic channels and distribution content in the digital environment. Also, income growth under this item is affected by the partial restoration of film distribution, which was limited in 2020 due to distribution. coronavirus
In May 2021, the company closed the deal to acquire 49% of the shares of MT-Technologies LLC (Quantum), increasing its ownership to 100%. This deal will allow Gazprom-Media Holding JSC to strengthen technological competencies, expertise in the segment of advertising and marketing technologies, as well as in sales of Digital Signage.
History
2024: Relocation of headquarters from Moscow to St. Petersburg
Gazprom Media Holding (GPMH) is moving its headquarters from Moscow to St. Petersburg, the company's general director Alexander Zharov said in early June 2024. This will be one of the final stages of Gazprom's large-scale move to the northern capital, which began more than ten years ago.
According to Zharov, the transfer of the head office of the media holding will allow it to be located in the base city for the parent company - PJSC Gazprom. In St. Petersburg, it is planned to rent about 5 thousand square meters. m of office space to accommodate about 500-600 employees.
Director of the Department of New Technologies J'son & Partners Consulting Dmitry Kolesov believes that moving to St. Petersburg can partially reduce the holding's costs of renting an office in Moscow. In 2024, GPMKh rents 12.3 thousand square meters. m in the business center "Trekhgornaya Manufactory." The weighted average rental rate for a Class A office in Moscow (33.6 thousand rubles per 1 sq. m per year) exceeds the same indicator in St. Petersburg (30 thousand rubles per 1 sq. m per year).
At the same time, the sources of the Kommersant publication claim that the editors of the NTV, TNT, Rutube video hosting and other assets of the holding will remain in Moscow, where the necessary infrastructure with expensive equipment has already been created. For example, NTV will move to a new television center with an area of 69 thousand square meters. m in the Ostankino area.
In addition, Dmitry Kolesov claims that having a head office in St. Petersburg will not give GPMKh tangible advantages, but it can reduce the efficiency of managing media assets.
In general, the move of Gazprom's divisions to St. Petersburg, which began in 2012, is nearing completion. According to realtors, at the peak of the process, the energy monopoly formed 13% of the demand for offices in the city, but by May 2024 this figure had decreased to less than 2%.[2]

Revenue growth by 1.1%, to 99.2 billion rubles, loss - 5.5 billion rubles
Gazprom-Media's revenue at the end of 2020 amounted to 99.2 billion rubles, an increase of 1.1% compared to 2019. Net losses rose to 5.5 billion rubles from 4.7 billion rubles in losses a year earlier.
The increase in cash losses in Gazprom-Media was associated with reserves that were taken into account at the end of 2020, as well as exchange rate differences under foreign exchange contracts. The increase in sales in the holding was explained by an increase in advertising revenues on broadcast and thematic channels - they grew by 2%, to 72.3 billion rubles.
The dynamics on individual channels in Gazprom-Media is not disclosed; by the end of March 2021, the holding manages NTV, Friday!, TNT, TNT4, TV-3, Match TV, the production and distribution of thematic TV channels (Red Media) and ten radio stations (Avtoradio, Energy, Humor FM, Romantika, Comedy Radio, Like FM, Relax FM, Children's Radio, Echo 101.ru Moscow).
Gazprom-Media's revenues from the sale of rights to audio-video playback in 2020 decreased by 7% compared to 2019, to 13.4 billion rubles. The main factor contributing to the fall was the restrictions on the operation of cinemas. In the second half of the year, some of the restrictions remained, but the holding companies released several premieres - the films Fire, Silver Skates, Streltsov and Doctor Lisa.
Among the negative factors of last year that affected the results of Gazprom-Media are the closure of cinemas, the cancellation and postponement of sports competitions, and a decrease in business activity. The recovery of the media market was smooth and began in the second half of the year. The dynamics of the holding turned out to be better than the general market, where there was a reduction in TV budgets.
The consolidated expenses of the holding at the end of 2020 decreased by 5.3% compared to the costs of a year ago, according to the statements.[3]

2019
Net losses - 4.7 billion rubles
In 2019, the revenue of the Gazprom-Media holding amounted to 98.1 billion rubles, and net losses - 4.7 billion rubles. A year earlier, the revenue of the owner of TNT, NTV and some other TV channels was measured at 95.5 billion rubles, and net profit of 2.22 billion rubles.
The loss in 2019 is associated with the creation of provisions for impairment of assets. In addition, the general trend in the TV advertising market in 2019 was reflected , as well as "the process of digital transformation of the Gazprom-Media holding, which involves outstripping investment in the development of digital services and technologies," added a representative of the holding, the press service of Gazprom-Media said.
Among the holding's TV channels, the most - 2.6 times, to 676 million rubles - the revenue from the Super channel increased, but this can be explained by the low base effect. According to RBC, this federal entertainment broadcaster was launched by Gazprom-Media in January 2018, but could not immediately gain access to households, which was reflected in its ratings and, accordingly, advertising fees. Excluding Super, Friday showed the largest revenue growth. The revenue of this channel under RAS increased by 13%, to 7.6 billion rubles.
The largest profit from core activities in 2019 was at the Pyatnitsa channel - almost 2 billion rubles. TNT had the largest net profit among 19 broadcasters - 2 billion rubles.
The operating loss of the Media Business segment, by which the bank means Gazprom-Media Holding and its subsidiaries , in 2019 amounted to 4.8 billion rubles against a profit of 1.2 billion rubles a year earlier, according to the statements. The holding's revenue over the past year increased by 3% to 98.1 billion rubles, according to the statements. "The main impact on operating and net financial results was the creation at the end of 2019 of provisions for impairment of assets that are carried out in accordance with IFRS. At the end of the year, excluding provisions for impairment, the company showed a net profit of 3.8 billion rubles.[4]

2018: Net profit of RUR 2.2 billion
The consolidated income of the Media Business segment [5]], in which Gazprom Media Holding is represented, in 2018 increased by 10.5% compared to 2017 and reached 95.5 billion rubles. Advertising continues to generate the main income, but revenue from content sales in the digital environment is growing.
At the end of 2018, the Media Business segment made an operating profit of 1.26 billion rubles. Gazprombank's Media Business segment ended 2018 with a net profit of 2.22 billion rubles (a year earlier - a net loss of 3.47 billion rubles). Net income is due to the growth of consolidated revenue. In addition, in 2018, the holding reduced financial costs associated with debt servicing and transferred a number of contracts to rubles. The main contribution to net profit was made by the Gazprom-Media television business.
Advertising revenues of the Media Business segment increased by 12% to 73.2 billion rubles.
Dmitry Chernyshenko, General Director of Gazprom-Media Holding JSC, noted that advertising revenues are still the core of the holding's revenue, but the company continues to develop new ways to monetize content. In particular, the geography of sales has been significantly expanded, Gazprom-Media television projects are presented on the world's largest streaming services. He also noted the steady growth of the TNT-Premier premium platform and access to the net profit of the holding's sports business.
The main share of non-advertising revenues of the Media Business segment falls on the sale of rights and distribution of media content. At the end of 2018, revenues from the sale of rights increased by 31.5% to 11.7 billion rubles. The growth is due to an increase in revenues from the distribution of thematic channels "Red Media," and sports channels "GPM Match," as well as from the film distribution "Central Partnership."
In addition, the growth in the sale of rights was influenced by the successful monetization of NTV projects in the digital environment both in Russia and abroad. In 2018, the new NTV series alone had more than 500 million views on YouTube and ivi.ru. Also, three NTV series were presented on the world's largest streaming services: "Walking in Agony" on Netflix, "Uppercut for Hitler" on Amazon Prime, and "Schubert" on Chinese Bilibili.
Also, the growth in the sale of rights was facilitated by the successful film distribution of the Gogol trilogy, which raised more than 1.3 billion rubles in cinemas.
Gazprom-Media is developing the distribution of its own content in the digital environment according to a paid model. In 2018, the holding launched the premium football TV channel Match Premier. The subscriber base of the TV channel in the second half of 2018 increased by 40%.
In August 2018, the TNT-PREMIER OTT platform started. Among the most popular premiere projects of the service are the series "House Arrest," "Call DiCaprio!," "Year of Culture" and "Dead Lake." The platform's content has collected more than 108 million views, 63% of which came from viewing premiere content. Today, the number of application installations has reached 3.6 million.
2017: Net loss of Gazprom-Media reduced by 8 times
The Gazprom-Media holding increased revenue to 86.4 billion rubles at the end of 2017, compared with 82.2 billion rubles a year earlier. At the same time, the net loss decreased 8 times - from 28.3 billion rubles to 3.4 billion rubles. The holding went to operating profit - it amounted to 1.3 billion rubles against 7.8 billion operating loss last year.
According to RNS, the operating result is associated with revenue growth, as well as the fact that the holding's operating expenses decreased by 5.5%, to 85 billion rubles. The net loss in the company was explained by non-cash write-offs - "in particular, the impairment of goodwill in television and film businesses and the creation of provisions for impairment of assets."
2016: Revenues up nearly 12%, loss tenfold
Consolidated revenues of the Gazprom-Media holding amounted to 82.2 billion rubles at the end of 2016, which is 11.7% higher than last year. OIBDA amounted to 6.9 billion rubles (an increase of 45%).
The growth driver was the launch of Match TV and TNT4 channels, film distribution and pay TV. The main chew is on the holding's entertainment TV, which includes TNT, TV-3, Friday!, TNT4 And 2x2.
Despite the growth in revenues, the company's loss amounted to 28.3 billion rubles, which is ten times more than last year's figure of 2.6 billion.
"The net loss is due to non-cash write-offs, in particular impairment of goodwill in the television and film businesses and provision for impairment of investments. The write-off is "paper" and does not affect the company's cash flow, "representatives of the holding told Sostav.
Revenues from the sale of rights due to the releases of the Central Partnership film distribution amounted to 8.8 billion rubles - an increase of 40%. A total of 33 films were released, including Viking, Disgusting Eight and Crew. The box office of the distributor reached 8.1 billion rubles.
2016
Media holding Gazprom-Media fell under US sectoral sanctions
Media holding Gazprom-Media was included in the list of Russian companies against which the United States imposed sectoral sanctions, RNS reports with reference to the website of the US Treasury. In total, about 100 companies were on this list, several dozen of them were Gazprom structures. The sanctions list has expanded in connection with the Russian-Ukrainian conflict. A number of individuals and legal entities fell under the restrictions, where, in addition to Gazprom's "daughter," Mostotrest also turned out to be, which is building a bridge across the Kerch Strait. Meanwhile, the press service of Gazprom-Media urges the media not to stir up panic and notes that this does not threaten serious consequences for the company.
Bet on RuTube
In August 2016, it became known that Gazprom Media was revising plans to develop its video services, making the main bet on RuTube. The future of the online cinema is in Now.ru, Kommersant sources said. Another video service - Zoomby.ru, whose audience has fallen nine times in two years, is dissatisfied with its minority co-owner - VGTRK, demanding 53 million rubles. debt for its content.
Another online cinema Gazprom-Media, which specializes in film content, also has problems Now.ru. According to the interlocutor of Kommersant, aware of the holding's plans, the Now.ru may be closed. A source at Gazprom Media admits that "everything is approaching this," but emphasizes that the Now.ru "will continue to exist for now."
Now.ru was launched in 2011 at the initiative of the former general director of TNT Roman Petrenko. According to TNT reports, the volume of long-term loans managed by the service CJSC "Now" from the holding structures reached 1.491 billion rubles by the end of 2013. It also indicated that TNT was preparing for the impairment of these loans, including due to multi-year losses of the video service.
In 2015, Now was merged into RTV LLC, which manages entertainment channels Gazprom-Media; the financial performance of the service is not disclosed.
The largest online asset of Gazprom-Media is Rutube, the main bet is made on it, and the situation with the rest of the video services leaves much to be desired, a Kommersant source in one of the holding's partners states. So, in two years, Zoomby's indicators returned to the level of the first months of work, and the audience fell significantly, he says. At the same time, Rutube's audience also dropped sharply - from 6.19 million in June 2014 to 3.85 million in June 2016. In 2015, Gazprom-Media's share in the market of Russian online cinemas was 10% (Zoomby, Now.ru and RuTube revenue from professional video were taken into account), iKS-Consulting estimated. The entire market was estimated at 3.4 billion rubles.
The interlocutor of Kommersant in the holding confirms that the bet is placed on the "organically popular Rutube." He associates the growth of Zoomby's audience in previous years with the purchase of traffic, now, according to him, the holding has reduced Zoomby's operating costs, and its loss has also decreased significantly (in 2014 it amounted to 102 million rubles). As for the claim of the All-Russian State Television and Radio Broadcasting Company against Zoomby, the interlocutor of Kommersant continues, this debt "has been accumulating since 2012."
Gazprom Media has already tried to reorganize this line of business. So, in 2014, Rostelecom"" and Gazprom-Media wanted to create a joint company, which would include Zoomby, Now.ru and Rutube. In preparation for the deal, Rutube switched to an exclusive online screening of popular TNT content, including Comedy Club releases, sitcoms and TV shows, for several years, sources told Kommersant. But at the end of 2014, Gazprom Media changed its leadership: instead of Mikhail Lesin the holding, it headed, and the Dmitry Chernyshenko deal fell through at the finish stage. Gazprom-Media continued to look for development opportunities on the Internet and eventually merged Rutube with the largest distribution network for legal content in the Pladform runet, through which video is posted on various sites, including the social network "." Vkontakte Gazprom-Media has 33.3% in the total Ruform company, the rest is with Pladform shareholders Armen Gulinyan, Ivan Tavrin and Innova[6]
2015
Advertising revenue growth by 3%
At the end of 2015, Gazprom-Media Holding increased advertising revenue by 3% to 57.3 billion rubles, and the company's total revenue increased by 2% to 73.6 billion rubles. It turns out that advertising sales on the holding's resources provided the media holding with almost 78% of its revenue.
I must say that Gazprom-Media Holding showed an increase in advertising revenue against the background of a total fall in the domestic advertising market by 10%, to 307 billion rubles (according to AKAR). But here it is necessary to take into account that it was in 2015 that the processes of consolidation of media assets by the holding were completed, and it was the total amount of their income that could affect the final figure.
