History

2023: How Russian online education services are successfully storming the global market

In mid-November 2023, information appeared that many Russian companies operating in the field of educational technologies (EdTech) intend to enter foreign markets. Work abroad opens up additional prospects for business development and revenue growth.

According to the Kommersant newspaper, domestic EdTech platforms began to develop operations outside the Russian Federation in 2020. The fact is that the Russian EdTech market as of the end of 2023 is in the consolidation stage around two key players - VK and Skyeng. Therefore, small companies are forced to either sell on the terms of the buyer, or look for geographical alternatives. For domestic companies, in particular, the Asia-Pacific region is attractive due to the "low entry threshold."

Many Russian EdTech companies intend to enter foreign markets

It is noted that in the current geopolitical situation, Russian EdTech companies are forced to carefully hide their roots. On the other hand, for the same reason, big players like Skillbox are pulling out of foreign markets "for fear of sanctions and reputational risks."

In the third quarter of 2023, a number of Russian EdTech projects entered New Zealand, Australia, India, Latin America and the CIS with their courses. Thus, the Advance Educational Technology Center is preparing educational products for an English-speaking audience. And the company "Profilum" (career guidance platform) began to develop a strategy for entering the markets of North Africa and the Middle East, Latin America and India: in August 2023, the company signed a memorandum of intent with Indian In Tandem Global Consulting in the amount of $7 million. In turn, the educational company Ultimate Education is increasing its presence in the CIS market (Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Belarus), increasing the number of courses available for the regions.[1]

2022: Attracting 520 million rubles from the venture capital fund "ВЭБ.РФ"

Venture fund "ВЭБ.РФ" - VEB Ventures - invested 520 million rubles in the Russian EdTech platform "Profilum," which was announced on June 14, 2022. The startup intends to spend the raised funds on product development, as well as on distribution in the Russian Federation and the creation of new solutions.

The Profilum team expects to connect most schools in Russia to its platform by the end of 2022. It is also planned to methodically develop its own services and courses for their commercial launch in 2023. In addition, it is expected that by the end of 2022 the platform will become the basis of the presidential career guidance project "Ticket to the Future" and will find its application in the implementation of other educational projects. The company will also strengthen the direction of regional analytics, which helps in career guidance for students from all over Russia, and will launch products aimed at improving career literacy.
