For April 2019, the strategic goal of the Federal Research Center "Fundamental Foundations of Biotechnology" of the Russian Academy of Sciences (Federal Research Center of Biotechnology of the Russian Academy of Sciences) is the creation of scientific and technological foundations for the development of bioeconomics, involving the replacement of chemical products and processes with biological ones, the integrated use of renewable raw materials and waste, the expansion of the range of target products and the development of new types of materials with fundamentally new properties and capabilities, the production of new bioactive substances, improving the efficiency and environmental friendliness of agricultural production, ensuring the safety and quality of food. The main research areas of the Center cover all the most important areas of modern biotechnology: industrial, medical, agricultural, food and biogeotechnology, and make it possible to solve current scientific and technical problems of the state scale.

History

2023: Participating in the development of an algorithm to find repeating elements in genomes

Scientists from NRNU MEPhI and the Federal Research Center of Biotechnology of the Russian Academy of Sciences have developed a mathematical algorithm that allows you to find repeating elements in genomes with high accuracy. They tested the new approach on nine species of bacteria, and previously unknown repeats were found in the genomes of each species, forming a kind of "marking" in the bacterial genome. According to the researchers, the algorithm will help find new genetic targets to increase the productivity of bacterial strains or to obtain new antibiotics.
