2024: Dismantling of the Ingall NPP in Lithuania

The dismantling of the Ignalinsky NPP is carried out by the German company NUKEM, which is wholly owned by Atomstroyexport, and this is the engineering division of the state corporation Rosatom. For more details see Energy of Lithuania.

2023: The West is hampered by Russian control over the company after the outbreak of the conflict in Ukraine

When European countries want to decommission outdated nuclear plants, they often turn to Nukem. Behind the scenes, dozens of nuclear engineers, radiation safety experts and government regulators are monitoring the operation, which could cost up to a billion dollars and take years to plan and implement. According to Michael Bechler of Uniper SE, who in 2023 leads the dismantling of the Swedish Barsebek nuclear power plant, that is why there are only a few players in the decommissioning business of highly radioactive facilities.

Among the oldest and most experienced are the German company Nukem Technologies Engineering Services GmbH, which for decades has offered its unique services in Asia and Africa, as well as throughout Europe. The company is fully owned by the Russian corporation Rosatom, which after the outbreak of the conflict in Ukraine puts it at the center of an uncomfortable confrontation.
