2023: 3D scanner deliveries to Saudi Arabia and Tajikistan begin

Texel, a Moscow-based manufacturer of software and professional 3D scanners, has begun shipping its products to Saudi Arabia and Tajikistan. Vladislav Ovchinsky, head of the Department of Investment and Industrial Policy (DIiPP), which is part of the Complex of Economic Policy and Property and Land Relations of the capital, spoke about this at the end of November 2023.

Earlier, Texel began supplying its products to South Korea and the UAE. So, a compact 3D scanner Texel Portal MX for color scanning of people has been delivered to South Korea. On it, a three-dimensional digital model can be obtained in just 90 seconds. The UAE has installed a larger model Texel Portal BX, which analyzes a person standing on the platform, and then special algorithms in one minute in the Texel Cloud turn the scan results into a realistic 3D model.

The idea to conduct an anthropometric study was born from an understanding of the problem of the mass fashion industry, explains Maxim Fedyukov, CEO of Texel. - The basis of industrial production of clothing is the dimensional characteristic of typical figures. Around the world, the dimensional typology is revised every 15 years, since during this period, as a result of the acceleration process, there is a change in the size, proportions and shape of the human body. The last full anthropometric studies were carried out in the country for the last time in 1986. The lack of relevant data in light industry leads to significant production losses and unsatisfied demand from consumers - things often "do not sit on the figure," do not sell out and are forced to be disposed of.

The company is convinced that the next anthropometric study of the population using the latest 3D scanning technologies will replace the outdated scientific and technical documentation for the construction of patterns of household, sports, departmental, special and uniforms. As a result, the Russian light industry will become more competitive and efficient.

Investments from IIDF, Sistema and Rusnano

On September 2, 2020, it became known about the attraction of investments by Texel in the amount of 110 million rubles. The developer of virtual fitting rooms was invested in the venture capital investment fund Rusnano Sistema, created jointly by AFK Sistema and Rusnano and the Internet Initiatives Development Fund (IIDF). The Russian startup intends to spend the funds received on international expansion.

Texel co-founder Sergei Klimentyev, commenting on the investments received, noted that the online clothing market was the first to be "ripe" for the introduction of digital buyers' doubles, and next in line was health, fitness, VR, computer games and the film industry.

According to the developers, the created Texel 3D scanner for people and large things is one of the fastest on the market - the process of creating a model takes about 90 seconds. The company's scanners work in 11 countries and, according to Texel statistics, the devices scan a new person every 10 minutes.

According to the Unified State Register of Legal Entities, as a result of investments, the IIDF received a 3.3% stake in the company. The largest co-owner of Texel is Sergey Klimentyev (32.8%).

The Texel team is now working on artificial intelligence (AI) technology that will allow you to create a 3D model of a person even without using a scanner. AI is trained on its own and largest database in the world - these are more than 60 thousand color 3D models of the human body, collected using Texel scanners in activation campaigns of the largest brands (Visa, MasterCard, HP, Cisco, 20 century FOX, etc.). Thanks to its unique data set, Texel is invited to a closed international consortium (including Intel, Target, Columbia, Lectra, etc.) to develop the IEEE 3D Body Processing standard for the 3D model of a human body, where it oversees the standardization of file formats.

Texel expects that within a year AI will allow you to create parametric models and determine the exact dimensions by photo - using a smartphone or a camera installed in a retail store.

Texel technologies can be used in many areas, but at the moment the team has decided to focus on retail. In particular, the use of customers of their own "virtual copies" will make it possible to more effectively select models and clothing size for themselves when ordering online and, as a result, make repeated purchases more often.

Thus, the use of buyers of their 3D models will allow online stores to reduce the return rate (according to statistics, this figure reaches 40% in the United States, or almost $260 billion per year) and increase sales (as the study showed, 85% of buyers are ready to purchase an additional 1-2 things if they are sure that the size will fit).

In addition, human 3D scanning technology can make the shopping process smarter and more personalized. Texel solutions allow customers to recommend certain brands and clothing collections, as well as sizes and even style, based on the type of shape.

Texel has already conducted pilot programs, for example, in one of the largest shopping centers in Europe: of the scanned 20 thousand people, 90% visited stores advised by the Texel system, and 50% bought clothes on the recommendation. An additional advantage for retail is that the buyer can save their measurements and use them for subsequent orders online.

The idea of ​ ​ a virtual fitting room is more than 20 years old. This market is littered with the bones of companies that have tried to solve the problem of choosing the right clothes. Someone lacked technology, someone did not have a business model glued, someone was not able to master integration. We analyzed the unsuccessful experience of the companies, assembled a strong team of immigrants from Deutsche Bank, BCG, Unilever, Samsung Research and Mail.Ru Group (a group of recommendation systems) and received good metrics as a result of the pilots conducted.
