2021: 5G testing in Moscow and Kazan metro

March 9, 2021 it became known about the upcoming testing of 5G networks in the Moscow and Kazan metro. Rostelecom has submitted an application to the State Commission on Radio Frequencies (GKRCH).

According to Vedomosti, citing materials for the March meeting of the GKRCH, the commission will consider the possibility of launching the Freshtel operator (part of Rostelecom) 5G in the Moscow and Kazan metro at frequencies of 3.4-3.8 GHz. This range is considered optimal for fifth-generation networks, and Rostelecom may remain the only operator who will have access to it, the publication notes.

By March 9, 2021, two operators have frequencies of 3.4-3.6 GHz - Neosprinta (owned by MegaFon) and Freshtel. Operators received permits to use them for 10 years back in 2011, and they expire in March 2021, and the GKRH has to decide what to do with these frequencies further.

Experts interviewed by the newspaper believe that if Rostelecom gets the opportunity to test the work of 5G standards, this will be a good signal for the entire market. Telecommunications companies will achieve the conversion of their desired ranges, as a result of which the frequencies 3.4 - 3.8 GHz will be used for 5G. By March 2021, operators are forced to test 5G technology at 4.4-4.9 GHz ranges.

Now Russian business is at risk of losing competitiveness, since 5G networks are already being launched into commercial operation around the world, and they are not expected in Russia until 2024, Rostelecom spokesman Valery Kostarev told Vedomosti. - At least landfills and experimental zones are needed, let these zones be in such places where interference with other communication networks is impossible, for example in the metro.

Vadim Poskakukhin, Project Manager of Spectrum Management, complains that instead of finding new or using existing technical solutions to release at least part of the spectrum to deploy 5G in major cities and ensure the normal operation of satellite networks outside them, there is an endless competition at the administrative level.[1]
