2023: The right to use the largest lithium deposit in Russia has been obtained

Polar Lithium, a joint venture between Nornl Nickel and Rosatom State Corporation, has received the right to use Russia's largest lithium deposit, Kolmozersky, located in the Murmansk Region. The press service of Norilsk Nickel announced this on February 8, 2023.

Located in the Murmansk region, the Kolmozerskoye field development project involves the production of lithium carbonate and hydroxide in the amount of 45,000 tons per year. These minerals are also used in the production of batteries - an industry that is rapidly developing both in Russia and abroad.

Discovered in 1947, Kolmozerskoye is the most promising Russian lithium deposit, which also contains beryllium, niobium and tantalum, Norilsk Nickel noted.

The Polar Lithium company plans to create a large-scale integrated production from mining and processing to high-tech products, which will open more than 1,000 new jobs and will replace imports to Russia of both lithium raw materials and battery components. The Federal Agency for Subsoil Use (Rosnedra) conducted an auction for the right to use the subsoil area for geological study, exploration and production of minerals. The starting amount of a one-time payment for the use of subsoil amounted to 1.56 billion rubles, and the term for using the site was 20 years.

The Kolmozersky project starts at the right time, when the demand for lithium in the production of electric vehicles and energy storage is growing rapidly, "says Sergey Stepanov, senior vice president and production director of Norilsk Nickel. - Taking into account the lithium production projects announced in other countries, we need to move quickly. The partnership with Rosatom provides the project with the maximum set of competencies and joint integration into all redistributions of the battery industry.[1]
