History

2022: Uber bought Car Next Door

On January 20, 2022, Uber announced the acquisition of Car Next Door to provide passengers with an option for trips less suitable for car sharing. The deal is based on Uber's constant investment in electric vehicles, micromobiles and public transportation to reduce excessive dependence on personal transportation and help create greener and more liveable cities, the press release said.

This deal marks the exit from the Car Next Door capital of Larix Igor Rybakov and Oscar Hartmann, who in 2017 invested 1 million Australian dollars in the project and received 3.5% in the company.

Uber bought Car Next Door

Adding Car Next Door to its product package, Uber hopes to offer Australians an affordable and convenient alternative to private car ownership, as it will give passengers a reliable option for trips that are less suitable for car sharing. The service operates throughout Australia, with cars in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Gold Coast, Cairns, Perth, Canberra, Adelaide, Hobart, Launceston and Newcastle.

In 2022, it marks 10 years since the launch of Uber and Car Next Door in Australia. During this time, much has changed, but one thing has remained unchanged: a common vision that we must make transport not only safe, convenient and affordable, but also environmentally friendly. Over the past decade, Uber has created joint travel options such as Uber Pool, invested $800 million worldwide in the development of electric vehicles, and also integrated micromobility and public transport capabilities into the Uber application, said Uber CEO in Australia and New Zealand Dom Taylor.

After the acquisition, Car Next Door will report to the Australian Uber team, but will otherwise work independently, and its existing leadership team will continue to focus on creating and scaling its technology in more cities in Australia.[1]
