2021: Creation of a company for the development of drugs using artificial intelligence

In early November 2021, the holding, which Alphabet is based on the corporation, Google launched a Britain new drug development company. It was called Isomorphic Labs. The company will rely on research conducted by the London laboratory, artificial intelligence DeepMind which Google acquired in 2014.

Although the company was officially announced only on November 4, 2021, Isomorphic Labs was registered back in February 2021. This follows from an application submitted to the register of British companies Companies House. Demis Hassabis, CEO and co-founder of DeepMind, is also the founder and CEO of Isomorphic Labs, and he will remain CEO of DeepMind.

In a blog post, Demis Hassabis described Isomorphic Labs as a commercial enterprise with a mission to rethink the entire drug discovery process from scratch. A spokesman for Isomorphic Labs stressed that the company is separate from DeepMind and has its own resources. Representatives of the company did not specify how many employees and what capital the company will have.

We believe that the fundamental use of advanced computing techniques and artificial intelligence can help scientists take their work to a new level and significantly accelerate the process of drug discovery. In appropriate cases, the teams of both companies can collaborate, especially in the early stages, while Isomorphic Labs recruits its team, "wrote Demis Hassabis, founder and CEO of Isomorphic Labs.

Isomorphic Labs plans to use artificial intelligence (AI) software to create new drugs and drugs. Identifying new drugs is itself a long, complex trial and error process that involves combining many different compounds in different ways. Several companies, including the London BenevolentAI and Atomwise of San Francisco, believe that AI can accelerate this process. Hassabis added that AI methods will increasingly be used not only to analyze data, but also to build powerful predictive and generative models of complex biological phenomena.

Alphabet has several other companies working in the field, health care including one Verily that develops software for the health sector and Calico one that works on aging and extending human life. The company DeepMind also worked on health issues, and previously had its own division, DeepMind Health. DeepMind conducts research in other areas of life science, and also made a breakthrough in the field known as protein folding. In 2020, the company announced that it had developed an AI system that can accurately predict the structure into which proteins will fold in a matter of days, solving a 50-year-old difficult task.^[1]
