2021: Amazon bought Wickr
At the end of June 2021, Amazon acquired the Wickr secure messaging application, launched in 2012. The value of the transaction is not disclosed.
AWS calls Wickr a company that has "developed the industry's safest end-to-end encryption communication technology." Wickr is so secure that it not only encrypts user data and conversations, but also removes metadata from all content transmitted over the network. Thanks to Wickr, AWS customers and partners will receive an expanded suite of security features that are not available in traditional communication services. This will allow Amazon to actively interact with government agencies and other enterprises that consider security a priority area.
Wickr is primarily intended for government agencies, military enterprises and individuals. This messaging application includes services that address different customer needs. The application allows users to exchange messages with continuous encryption and expired messages, including photos, videos, and attached files. Wickr offers its users several applications, including Wickr Pro, Wickr RAM and Wickr Enterprise, Wickr Me. It is known that the WickrRAM was specially designed to take into account the interests of the military, and Wickr Enterprise was created for companies with a large number of employees.
With the transition to a hybrid work environment, enterprises faced the problem of protecting communication tools with employees working remotely. Wickr secure communications solutions help enterprises and government organizations adapt to these changes in the work environment and will be a welcome addition to the growing set of collaboration and productivity services that AWS offers to customers and partners, Amazon said in a press release.
