History

2021: SpaceX bought Swarm Technologies

In early August 2021, it was reported that SpaceX would acquire Swarm Technologies, a satellite communications company, which would be the first such deal for a space company led by Elon Musk.

By August 2021, Swarm operates a network of 120 fist-sized satellites, as well as a number of ground stations. As a result of the transaction control over land and space technologies in the form of licenses, the Swarm company will transfer SpaceX. If the transaction is approved, the startup will become a direct subsidiary of a larger company.

SpaceX acquired Swarm Technologies

This acquisition marks a dramatic departure from the established strategy of SpaceX, a company engaged in the development of its own technologies.

A deal between the two companies was reportedly reached on July 16, 2021. The FCC documents do not disclose any financial details or terms of the transaction. Both companies declined to comment.

Swarm's services will only benefit from better capitalization and access to SpaceX resources, as well as from synergies associated with the acquisition of a satellite development, production and launch service provider. For its part, SpaceX will receive a similar benefit from access to intellectual property and experience gained by the Swarm team, as well as from joining this resourceful and effective team to, SpaceX the representative said in an official statement.

What this means for the activities of SpaceX, in particular for its Starlink satellite network, is not yet clear, since these satellites operate in a different frequency range than Swarm. In the short term, Swarm CEO Sarah Spangelo said in July 2021 that the company is still moving towards its goal of creating a constellation of 150 satellites.

Compared to SpaceX, Swarm is a relatively new company. It raised $25 million as part of Series A in August 2018, but only in early 2021 launched its main product into commercial operation. This product, Tile, is a small modem that can be built into various connection devices and connected to a satellite network to give users a relatively inexpensive way to power devices with the Internet of all technologies in the field of IoT.[1]
