2021: Amazon bought Art19
At the end of June 2021, Amazon announced the purchase of a large platform for the placement and monetization of Art19 podcasts. The financial terms of the transaction are not disclosed.
In addition to hosting podcasts, Art19 is a platform for selling targeted advertisements, from which Amazon can also benefit. Amazon reported that immediately after the completion of the deal on the Art19 site, nothing will change.
Amazon, through its Amazon Music platform, began offering podcasts only in September 2020. However, since then the company has been actively developing in this direction, for example, through a number of acquisitions, including the purchase of Wondery. The Art19 deal will allow Amazon to take a wider role in the industry. The company will not only create content through Wondery and distribute it through the application, but will also be able to host podcasts, attracting new partners to collaborate.
According to The Verge, as part of the Art19 deal, Amazon has even more data on user preferences, including outside the applications already covered by the company.[1]
