2023: Car sales halt due to fabrication of crash tests

On December 20, 2023, the Japanese concern Toyota Motor announced that its small car division Daihatsu was suspending deliveries of all its models. The reason is the scandal associated with the falsification of crash tests.

In April 2023, Daihatsu informed about the identification of problems related to safety tests in side collisions. It was said then that the data could have been fabricated for several compact models, most of which are sold under the Toyota brand. After that, Daihatsu decided to form an independent commission to conduct a more thorough investigation. Experts concluded that the problem has a much larger scale than originally thought.

An official statement on Toyota's website said the commission had identified 174 new violations in 25 test categories in addition to those previously found. In total, falsification of crash test results covers 64 Daihatsu models, including 22 models sold under the Toyota brand, as well as models of third-party brands. It has been found that to test airbags on cars such as Daihatsu Move/Subaru Stella, Daihatsu Cast/Toyota Pixis Joy, Daihatsu Gran Max/Toyota Town Ace/Mazda Bongo, an electronic control unit was used, excellent about what is used on production vehicles.

In connection with the current situation, Daihatsu decided to stop supplying all its models, which are produced both in Japan and abroad. Toyota is also temporarily suspending sales of affected vehicles.

We would like to express our sincere apologies for the inconvenience and distress this has caused all stakeholders, including customers. We consider safety certification to be the primary condition for running an automotive business, Toyota said in a statement.[1]
