KDDI Corporation the Japanese telecommunication is a mobile operator communications under the au brand. The name of the corporation is a synthesis of abbreviations from the Romanized names of the companies included in it: Daini Denden Inc. Kyocera (DDI ( )), Kokusai Denshin Denwa Corp. Toyota (KDD) и Nippon Idou Tsuushin (IDO Corp. ( )).

History

2022: Accident that left a third of Japan's population without communication

KDDI, a major Japanese telecommunications company, said on July 5, 2022 that it had completed work to restore mobile networks. The outage lasted about two days, affecting up to 39.15 million subscribers (about a third of Japan's population) and was regarded as the industry's worst outage of all time.

KDDI said the problem occurred when replacing the voice call switching system during regular maintenance, with repair work causing traffic concentrations, causing the company to reduce user access.

At a press conference, KDDI President Makoto Takahashi apologized for the network outages, which began in July 2, 2022 around 1:35 am Tokyo time, and said he would consider compensating individual and corporate subscribers.

On July 3, 2022, the company fully completed work to reopen the network in eastern Japan around 5:30 p.m.

With the typhoon approaching, the company has prioritized reconnecting for users in western Japan. The work was completed at 11 a.m.

The interruptions that lasted throughout the days caused numerous inconveniences. Passengers have not been able to use IC cards to top up bills on buses operating in the Tokyo metropolitan area for some time, and one regional bank said ATMs located outside its branches could not be used either.

Network problems also affected UQ Mobile's low-cost mobile brand and "povo" wireless customers, as well as smaller competitors renting connections from a telecommunications company such as Rakuten Mobile.

As of March 2022, KDDI provided services to approximately 62 million subscribers, while individual contracts of the au, UQ Mobile and povo brands accounted for about 31 million subscribers.

Interior and Communications Minister Yasushi Kaneko told a news conference that he believed the disruption should be classified as a "serious incident."

Urging telecom operators not to forget that mobile is an important part of social infrastructure, Kaneko said that appropriate steps will be taken to resolve this issue, hinting at the issuance of an administrative order.

Under Japan's telecommunications business law, the government can classify a problem as a "serious incident" if more than 30,000 people connected to services that allow emergency numbers such as 110 or 119 to be dialed are affected within an hour or more.[1]
