On August 8, 2024, the president Russia Vladimir Putin signed a decree establishing the National Center for Genetic Resources of autochthonous grape varieties. It will be formed on the basis of the Kurchatov Institute. To Moscow
Autochthonous are those grape varieties that have appeared and grow in a specific geographical area. Autochthonous varieties are used predominantly where they are cultivated - unlike international varieties common in the world's major wine regions regardless of origin.
In accordance with the signed decree, one of the main functions of the center being created is the formation and replenishment of a national catalog of especially valuable samples of genetic resources of autochthonous (aboriginal) grapes, as well as ensuring the guaranteed long-term preservation and reproduction of samples included in the national catalog. In addition, methods for obtaining, storing, comprehensive assessment and use of samples of genetic resources of autochthonous grape varieties will be developed, including using modern methods of scientific research, advanced ideas and promising technologies.
Other tasks of the center are to monitor the state of genetic resources of autochthonous grape varieties in places of its natural growth and cultivation; research related to the study and use of genetic resources of autochthonous grape varieties; creation and development of the infrastructure of the center, including a cryobank and an information storage and processing center.
Another decree of the President of the Russian Federation decided to form an interdepartmental commission on the formation, preservation and use of collections of genetic resources of autochthonous grape varieties. This commission is entrusted with the coordination of the activities of the National Center.[1]
