2023: Mishustin approved the creation of the institution

In May 2023, Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin signed an order to create the St. Petersburg branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences. The corresponding document is published on the portal of legal information.

According to the order, the St. Petersburg branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences will engage in the participation and conduct of fundamental and exploratory scientific research, forecasting the main directions of development of St. Petersburg, the Leningrad Region and Russia as a whole from the point of view of the scientific sphere. Within two months, the RAS will approve the composition of the department and the list of federal property, which will be transferred to the new department of the Academy of Sciences, according to a document published on May 17, 2023.

The government's order to create a new branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences was issued a few days before the first after the election of the new leadership of the Academy of Sciences of the General Meeting of Members of the Russian Academy of Sciences, which will be held May 23-24, 2023 in Moscow.

2022: The meeting of RAS members approved the creation of a branch in St. Petersburg

The decision to create a regional branch in St. Petersburg was made at a general meeting of RAS members in September 2022. As noted then at the Academy of Sciences, almost 200 members of the Russian Academy of Sciences work in St. Petersburg and the Leningrad Region. This is comparable to the Siberian branch of the academy.

For several years, we fought to ensure that the structure of the Russian Academy of Sciences appeared in St. Petersburg with its rights and obligations.... Thanks to our tough position, it was possible to agree on the opening of a unit of the Russian Academy of Sciences in St. Petersburg, - said in July 2022 President of the Russian Academy of Sciences Alexander Sergeyev.

The order to create the St. Petersburg branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences was given by the president of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin in February 2022.
