The department's Center for Speech Pathology and Neurorehabilitation health care Moscow began using technology virtual reality () VR to work with inpatient patients with symptoms of apathy, fatigue, and mood deterioration. This was announced in June 2023 by the psychiatrist of the center, an employee of the laboratory of psychopharmacology of the Federal State Budgetary Institution "Scientific Center for Mental Health" Allan Beniashvili. According to him, the technology is also used at the Federal State Budgetary Institution "Federal Research Center of Nutrition and Biotechnology" and the Federal State Budgetary Institution "National Medical Research Center of Cardiology," Ministry of Health Russia whose specialists undergo advanced training in the research group of the center.
Beniashvili told Vedomosti that this VR project was initiated by the first Russian division of Boeing back in 2020. The technology was planned to be used to quickly restore mental and cognitive exhaustion in pilots and controllers. By June 2023, with the help of these developments, the center helps hospital patients cope with the consequences of long-term treatment in hospital conditions. In all three centers, VR relaxation service is provided free of charge. The total number of patients treated since 2021 is 500, he said in June 2023.
In the first experiment, which involved 40 patients, reduced levels of depression, anxiety, fatigue and stress among participants were noted. Beniashvili said that during the sessions, patients put on a virtual reality helmet and immersed themselves in virtual mountain landscapes and other scenes for 30 minutes.
During this session, the patient was in a special cocoon chair and underwent relaxation sessions, which included elements of physical therapy, as well as work with emotions and visual images.[1]
