Plans to enter the top five largest manufacturers of information security solutions in Russia

Yandex Cloud, the cloud division of Yandex, plans to enter the top five Russian information security (IS) solutions providers. Yevgeny [1] Sidorov, director of security at Yandex Cloud, told SecPost about this in early December 2025.

According to him, the company initially focused on ensuring the protection of its own products. However, against the background of growing demand for relevant services from third-party customers, it was decided to develop a family of information security services independently not only for internal needs, but also for external customers. Yandex Cloud provides a suite of managed services that includes Smart Web Security (protecting sites and applications from bots, DDoS attacks and hacking), Yandex Cloud Detection and Response (SOC Incident Monitoring and Response Service), Yandex Identity Hub (centralized management of users and access to enterprise applications via SSO), Certificate Manager (TLS certificate management), Cloud Registry (secure storage and management of software artifacts ), SmartCaptcha ( request verification, protection against bot traffic and content parsing), etc.

Yandex announced its intention to enter the top 5 Russian information security developers

In 2026, as Sidorov said, Yandex Cloud will release its own security event management system (SIEM). Users of cloud, hybrid and local infrastructures are named as potential consumers of information security services.

Ivan Shumovsky, Deputy Director of the Clouds and Data Department of Reksoft, notes that the key advantages of Yandex Cloud in terms of information security development are a ready-made ecosystem and a loyal customer base. The number of Yandex Cloud users in the third quarter of 2025 increased by 31%, reaching almost 46 thousand. Among the risks, Shumovsky highlights tough competition from leading information security market players such as Kaspersky Lab and Positive Technologies.[1]

2019: Yandex's cloud business overgrown with customers, but continues to "eat away" profits

The experimental division of Yandex (Other Bets and Experiments), represented by the projects Yandex.Drive, Yandex Zen, Yandex.Cloud, geoservices and educational services, ended 2019 with a negative EBITDA indicator (profit before depreciation, taxes and depreciation) of 5.2 billion rubles. This follows from the transcript of a conference call with the participation of company representatives to discuss quarterly financial results. Such an indicator means that, despite the overall revenue growth, this direction does not yet generate profit.

In the 4th quarter of 2019, the loss of EBITDA of the experimental division amounted to 1.8 billion rubles. The operational and financial director of Yandex, Gregory Abovsky, calls this the result of mainly investments in Yandex.Drive and the cloud direction.

A similar reason for the negative EBITDA indicator of the direction of experiments in the company was cited following the discussion of the results of 1-3 quarters of 2019.

As of February 2020, Yandex.Cloud has more than 20 thousand active users, of which more than 25% switched to commercial consumption

According to the results of the 2nd quarter of 2019, Gregory Abowski mentioned that the cloud direction is beginning to demonstrate demand. And according to the results of the fourth quarter - that it is one of the main areas of investment of the division, and that the company, being satisfied with the current results, will continue to invest in it.

Yandex.Cloud chose not to voice TAdviser its revenue for 2019 in absolute terms. In 2018, in the year of launch, according to the Kontur.Focus database, this indicator of the Yandex.Cloud legal entity was 1.1 million rubles.

As of February 2020, this area has more than 20 thousand active users, of which more than 25% switched to commercial consumption, reported TAdviser in Yandex.Cloud. Among the large companies that use the services of Yandex cloud services are Ozon, Leroy Merlin, Decathlon. The services are also used by high-tech young companies Genotek, SkyEng, Axlebolt.

File:Aquote1.png
In September 2019, it was only a year since the launch of Yandex.Cloud. This year we have tripled in the number of services, attracted thousands of new user companies. At the same time, it is necessary to take into account that Yandex.Cloud is a B2B platform, and we have an incomparably longer process of concluding transactions, developing consumption among existing customers. Despite this, in the fourth quarter, in relation to the third quarter, Yandex.Cloud's revenue from cloud services grew by about 50% - this is a very good indicator in our segment, - said TAdviser in Yandex.Cloud.
File:Aquote2.png

Logo in 2019

The company also told TAdviser what Yandex.Cloud investments went to, which were discussed by the company's top managers in conference calls. They are distributed in two main areas: service development and team development. The Yandex.Cloud platform is based on its own developments, including machine learning and artificial intelligence services. The launch of new services, support for existing ones require significant resources, says a Yandex.Cloud representative.

In 2019, the number of services in Yandex.Cloud increased to 27. They can be divided into 4 groups:

  • Scalable infrastructures are virtual machines and disks
  • Data processing and management services - databases, etc.
  • services for creating cloud applications;
  • machine learning and AI services.

The most significant releases in 2019 in the company are called Managed Kubernetes - a service for working with container architecture; Data Lens - data analysis and visualization tool; Cloud Functions - serverless computing and YDB - the first database management system (DMS) of the NewSQL family, developed in Russia from scratch. In addition, in 2019, the company launched a marketplace of cloud solutions.

2016: Founding of the company

Clouds Technologies Yandex were established by Yandex in April 2016. Tatyana Bakharevskaya, Deputy Director of the Yandex Operations and IT Services Department, was then appointed its General Director.

The goals of creating a legal entity in Yandex at that time were explained by the media plans to launch cloud infrastructure services like the Amazon Web Services Yandex service [7]. At the first stage, it was planned to offer companies virtual servers "based on the latest generation Intel processors." Yandex noted that the company used to make data centers for its projects, and now "is ready to share experience with external projects." Yandex Cloud solutions are focused on both large companies and small businesses and startups that do not want to invest in the development of their own infrastructure.

Yandex also widely announced its own developed cloud technologies in 2013-2014. In particular, we are talking about the Elliptics data warehouse and the Cocaine PaaS platform, used by the Internet company to manage the infrastructure of its services.

Elliptics technology, for example, as of 2016, is used in Yandex.Photos, Yandex.Music, Yandex.Maps"," "Yandex.Direct," Yandex.Market"," "Yandex.Weather," "Yandex.Store."
