I am sure that everyone will benefit from our cooperation - first of all, consumers of new services and services, - said Vladimir Kiriyenko, First Vice President of Rostelecom. |
According to him, within the framework of the new strategy, Rostelecom is betting on the development of modern digital services in partnership with the strongest market players. Yandex undoubtedly has unique competencies in developing software and services, he added.
By June 2021, about 10 thousand companies were connected to the Yandex.Cloud cloud platform, launched in 2018. Over the past year, the volume of consumption of services by large business has grown fivefold, Rostelecom reported.
This is not the first cooperation between Rostelecom and Yandex in the field of cloud technologies. Earlier, the telecom operator launched the Cloud tariff plan with a subscription fee of 850-100 rubles, which provides customers with the ability to store files on Yandex.Disk[12]
2020
Revenue - 970 million rubles
At the end of 2020, the company's revenue. YandexCloud amounted to 970 million. rubles
Yandex revenue from cloud services increased 4.5 times
In 2020, the revenue of the Yandex.Cloud platform increased four and a half times and reached 1 billion rubles. This was announced by the company in February 2021. Yandex.Cloud chose not to comment on whether this direction went to profit in the same year. In 2019, it showed a net loss.
The number of commercial clients of Yandex.Cloud increased in 2020 compared to 2019 by 1.4 times and amounted to 9.7 thousand, and the average check of one client increased by 3 times during this period.
We highlight several main reasons for this growth. First, Russian and international companies have begun to more actively create and develop their own digital products. Secondly, many industries, for example, retail and e-commerce, faced a sharp increase in the burden on online services due to the pandemic and companies were looking in the clouds for the possibility of rapidly expanding the IT infrastructure, increasing productivity and resiliency, - explained in Yandks.Cloud. |
60% of the platform's revenue fell on the most popular group of services - "Basic Infrastructure and Network," cited data in Yandex.Cloud. This group includes virtual machines, network drives, and virtual network management tools.
The contribution of the Machine Learning service group to the total turnover amounted to 14%, Data Platform - 12%, Automated Container Management - 7%. And another 7% of Yandex.Cloud's revenue in 2020 belongs to the marketplace and paid support.
Yandex.Cloud clarifies that the share of Yandex group companies in the revenue structure of the Yandex.Cloud platform in 2020 amounted to 4%. When calculating the indicator, only Yandex.Cloud consumption by Yandex Group services is taken into account according to general market conditions. The volume of consumption of resources of the internal cloud platform, localized for the tasks of companies and individual services of Yandex Group, is not taken into account in the revenue structure of Yandex.Cloud.
In 2020, the number of large clients of the Yandex.Cloud platform more than 2 times increased, and their consumption of Yandex.Cloud services increased almost 5 times. Large customers accounted for 48% of Yandex.Cloud's total revenue.
According to the project, 270 Yandex.Cloud customers belong to large consumers of cloud services. Among them are such companies as, for example, Leroy Merlin, Ozon, M. Video, VTB, SkyEng, HSE, etc. Such customers process large amounts of data, actively develop corporate and industry digital platforms to manage internal business processes, launch and support new applications and services.
Based on the experience of Yandex.Cloud, the company has identified 4 main scenarios for the consumption of cloud services by companies:
- Migrate enterprise applications and services from your own infrastructure to the cloud
- development of a unified environment for development, testing and launch of new business applications (digital products);
- Create an enterprise data platform for data storage, processing, and analysis
- application of services based on artificial intelligence and machine learning tools.
Yandex.Cloud believes that in the next few years, business will massively use clouds as holistic platforms, on which, on request, you can get all the necessary services to solve business development problems.
The company told TAdviser that they see a significant increase in competition in certain segments of the cloud market. The business associated with cloud services for mainly corporate clients has been developed in the past few years by other large companies whose main business is not related to the provision of IT services and products to this sector in a classic form. Among them Mail.ru Group and MTS.
The Russian cloud market is still moving towards saturation, significantly lagging behind the saturation level of Western markets, they shared their opinion with TAdviser in the company.
In the fall of 2020, IDC predicted that spending on public and private clouds in the Russian market will grow in 2020 by 21.8% year-on-year in dollars, and until 2025 will grow at a CAGR of 18.6%.

2019
Yandex.Cloud received its first major revenue, but has not yet made a profit
According to the Kontur.Fokus database, Yandex.Cloud, which develops Yandex's cloud-related business, received revenue of about 174 million rubles in 2019. Previously, the company did not disclose the financial indicators of its activities in absolute terms. In the first year of its operation, the company, created in 2018, earned 1.1 million rubles.
Yandex.Cloud has not yet reached a profit. In 2019, its net loss amounted to 13.2 million rubles, in 2018 - 4.6 million rubles. The company did not comment on when it expects to reach profitability.
Yandex.Cloud told TAdviser that during the year the number of paying customers in all segments steadily increased: large companies, medium and small businesses.
Earlier, the company reported that over the year the number of services it provides increased to 27. They can be divided into 4 groups:
- Scalable infrastructures are virtual machines and disks;
- Data processing and management services - databases, etc.
- services for creating cloud applications;
- machine learning and AI services.
The greatest demand remained for basic cloud services - IaaS, they say in Yandex.Cloud. At the same time, managed database services, Kubernetes, Yandex SpeechKit (speech synthesis and recognition) became the fastest growing.
Yandex.Cloud added that amid the pandemic and economic crisis in 2020, they retained growth themes.
In a crisis situation, not all companies have reduced consumption and frozen projects. On the contrary, in a number of areas it has grown, and companies have expanded their consumption of cloud resources to cope with the load. We also saw examples of how the speed of transition to cloud resources has increased - the crisis exacerbated the need to launch new digital products, the company explained to TAdviser. |
At the end of 2020, Yandex.Cloud expects business growth that exceeds the medium-term market growth rate.
Yandex's cloud business has overgrown with customers, but continues to "eat away" profits
The experimental division of Yandex (Other Bets and Experiments), represented by the projects Yandex.Drive, Yandex Zen, Yandex.Cloud, geoservices and educational services, ended 2019 with a negative EBITDA indicator (profit before depreciation, taxes and depreciation) of 5.2 billion rubles. This follows from the transcript of a conference call with the participation of company representatives to discuss quarterly financial results. Such an indicator means that, despite the overall revenue growth, this direction does not yet generate profit.
In the 4th quarter of 2019, the loss of EBITDA of the experimental division amounted to 1.8 billion rubles. The operational and financial director of Yandex, Gregory Abovsky, calls this the result of mainly investments in Yandex.Drive and the cloud direction.
A similar reason for the negative EBITDA indicator of the direction of experiments in the company was cited following the discussion of the results of 1-3 quarters of 2019.
According to the results of the 2nd quarter of 2019, Gregory Abowski mentioned that the cloud direction is beginning to demonstrate demand. And according to the results of the fourth quarter - that it is one of the main areas of investment of the division, and that the company, being satisfied with the current results, will continue to invest in it.
Yandex.Cloud chose not to voice TAdviser its revenue for 2019 in absolute terms. In 2018, in the year of launch, according to the Kontur.Focus database, this indicator of the Yandex.Cloud legal entity was 1.1 million rubles.
As of February 2020, this area has more than 20 thousand active users, of which more than 25% switched to commercial consumption, reported TAdviser in Yandex.Cloud. Among the large companies that use the services of Yandex cloud services are Ozon, Leroy Merlin, Decathlon. The services are also used by high-tech young companies Genotek, SkyEng, Axlebolt.
In September 2019, it was only a year since the launch of Yandex.Cloud. This year we have tripled in the number of services, attracted thousands of new user companies. At the same time, it is necessary to take into account that Yandex.Cloud is a B2B platform, and we have an incomparably longer process of concluding transactions, developing consumption among existing customers. Despite this, in the fourth quarter, in relation to the third quarter, Yandex.Cloud's revenue from cloud services grew by about 50% - this is a very good indicator in our segment, - said TAdviser in Yandex.Cloud. |
The company also told TAdviser what Yandex.Cloud investments went to, which were discussed by the company's top managers in conference calls. They are distributed in two main areas: service development and team development. The Yandex.Cloud platform is based on its own developments, including machine learning and artificial intelligence services. The launch of new services, support for existing ones require significant resources, says a Yandex.Cloud representative.
In 2019, the number of services in Yandex.Cloud increased to 27. They can be divided into 4 groups:
- Scalable infrastructures are virtual machines and disks
- Data processing and management services - databases, etc.
- services for creating cloud applications;
- machine learning and AI services.
The most significant releases in 2019 in the company are called Managed Kubernetes - a service for working with container architecture; Data Lens - data analysis and visualization tool; Cloud Functions - serverless computing and YDB - the first database management system (DMS) of the NewSQL family, developed in Russia from scratch. In addition, in 2019, the company launched a marketplace of cloud solutions.
2018: Creation of Yandex.Cloud service
In the 1 quarter of 2018, Yandex's plans to create cloud infrastructure services materialized - the company prepared a new service called Yandex.Cloud for launch. TAdviser became aware of this from a conference call between top Yandex managers and analysts on April 25, dedicated to the company's quarterly financial results. Read more here.
2016: Founding of the company
Clouds Technologies Yandex were established by Yandex in April 2016. Tatyana Bakharevskaya, Deputy Director of the Yandex Operations and IT Services Department, was then appointed its General Director.
The goals of creating a legal entity in Yandex at that time were explained by the media plans to launch cloud infrastructure services like the Amazon Web Services Yandex service [14]. At the first stage, it was planned to offer companies virtual servers "based on the latest generation Intel processors." Yandex noted that the company used to make data centers for its projects, and now "is ready to share experience with external projects." Yandex Cloud solutions are focused on both large companies and small businesses and startups that do not want to invest in the development of their own infrastructure.
Yandex also widely announced its own developed cloud technologies in 2013-2014. In particular, we are talking about the Elliptics data warehouse and the Cocaine PaaS platform, used by the Internet company to manage the infrastructure of its services.
Elliptics technology, for example, as of 2016, is used in Yandex.Photos, Yandex.Music, Yandex.Maps"," "Yandex.Direct," Yandex.Market"," "Yandex.Weather," "Yandex.Store."
Elliptics and Cocaine source codes are open[15][16] and published on GitHub.
[2] As of 2016, Yandex's IT infrastructure is based on four data centers in Moscow and the Moscow region, one data center each in the Ryazan region and Finland. Another data center is being built in Vladimir.
