2022

Ozon Bank joins Ekom Bank

On September 5, 2022, Ozon announced the merger of its banks. As part of the reorganization, Ozon Bank, created on the basis of Oney Bank, bought in 2021 from Sovcombank, joins Ekom Bank, created from scratch. Read more here.

Bank creation

In mid-March 2022, it became known about the creation of Ekom Bank by Ozon. The authorized capital of the credit institution is 3.6 billion rubles, which is significantly higher than that of Ozone Bank, which previously launched an Internet retailer and which subsequently fell under Western sanctions.

The date of registration of the bank on the website CENTRAL BANK is indicated on March 11, 2022, on the same day information about it was entered into the Unified State Register of Legal Entities. The date of the universal license No. 3542 issued to the bank is March 15, 2022. A universal license allows you to open representative offices, and the marketplace is actively developing operations and attracting sellers to the CIS, notes Kommersant with reference to a source on the market.

Ozon told the publication that the launch of the new bank is due to economic reasons, namely "growing demand from sellers and franchisees of the chain of points of issue of orders for financial products."

The appearance of the bank from scratch excludes the possibility of negative consequences from the fact of ownership of another owner, as was the case with Ozone Bank, explained Yevgeny Vorobyov, head of the credit analysis department of Ingosstrakh Investments Management Company.

According to other experts interviewed by the newspaper, in the context of complicated Russian-American relations, creating a new shell for business may be the most suitable solution. Therefore, in the current conditions, the Bank of Russia has shown a certain flexibility in terms of various procedures and approvals for Ekom-Bank.

Evgeny Vorobyov admitted that the new bank will be used by Ozon to expand its presence in Asia.^[1]
