Start a restaurant with automatic order delivery

On June 10, 2020, KFC announced TAdviser preparations for the opening of its "restaurant of the future," the concept of which is to minimize indoor contacts. Contactless service is provided due to the lack of traditional cash desks with cashiers (instead of digital kiosks), as well as using a contactless automated order area and a system biometric identifications for paying and receiving orders. The restaurant will also become an incubator of innovative ideas and digital solutions for KFC, the most successful of which will be implemented in other restaurants of the chain, transforming it entirely.

The restaurant, located in the area of the Butyrskaya metro station in Moscow, is already fully ready for operation on June 10, 2020 and will be able to start receiving guests after removing the corresponding restrictions for catering establishments.

All orders in the presented restaurant will be made only through digital kiosks. To simplify and speed up the procedure, KFC additionally implemented a biometric identification system in all devices. It converts a face shot into an individual digital code and enables the visitor, having registered once, not only to save herself from having to take out a card or mobile phone to pay for an order on all subsequent visits to KFC, but also to order her favorite dishes even faster, which she remembers and offers on subsequent visits. If desired, the guest can place an order without registration.

Order Hall and Beverage Dispensing Station

The restaurant provides the possibility of ordering using the click & collect function, when the guest places an order in the KFC mobile application, and takes it at the specified time from the corresponding cell in the restaurant.

In order to improve security in the restaurant, cash circulation is minimized: for example, a visitor will be able to pay for an order in three contactless ways (at the choice of a guest) - using a biometric identification system, a bank card or phone that supports Apple Pay or Android Pay technologies. If the guest needs help, he can contact the host or call the restaurant manager through a special SOS kiosk. Those wishing to pay for the order in cash will also be able to do this using a special terminal.

Self-service kiosks for low-mobility guests with biometric identification system

Part of the kitchen of the "restaurant of the future" is open: the guest can watch as his order is formed and moves along the conveyor belt, and then with the help of a special robotic board is placed in a cell where he is stored for no more than 10 minutes. The cell is opened automatically using a facial recognition system, which is also installed on the automatic hot beverage dispensers. Thus, the first hands that will touch freshly prepared chicken are the hands of the guest.

The visitor picks up the order from the cell

The restaurant will feature a full KFC menu, with the exception of ice cream in the cone, beer and Chef Lemonade. The digital transformation of the player of the fast food industry in Russia can also affect the entire fast service industry, contributing to its further development in line with modern digital trends.

We introduce innovations not only in internal business processes, but also work to make ordering dishes directly in the restaurant and beyond even more convenient and fast for millions of KFC chicken lovers. Together with our guests, we will test the most interesting ideas and decide which of them will be introduced in other restaurants of the chain, transforming it entirely, - notes Raisa Polyakova, CEO of KFC in Russia and the CIS. - In addition, our "restaurant of the future" will be a response to the challenges of modern reality, where ensuring security and reducing the number of contacts become an important factor in modern hospitality and a guarantor of business stability.

As part of the prevention of the spread of coronavirus infection in the "restaurant of the future," as in the remaining more than 930 restaurants of the chain, increased sanitary and hygienic measures will be taken to ensure the safety of guests and employees. Special markings will be applied on the floor in the digital kiosk area, which will remind visitors to maintain social distance. Special information signs will be placed in the general halls of the restaurant and on chairs, warning visitors about the need to maintain a distance of 1.5 meters and offering to take any other free space. Tables will be disinfected after each guest, self-service kiosks and other surfaces that guests often touch - once every 30 minutes. Guests of the restaurant will be able to use antibacterial soap in guest bathrooms and disinfect their hands with a sanitizer.

2018: Using bitcoins to pay for orders

In January 2018, KFC began accepting bitcoins to pay for orders. By the time the pilot project is launched, only one dish can be paid for with cryptocurrency.

The Canadian representative office of KFC offers customers to purchase a Bitcoin Bucket chicken basket for bitcoins, which costs about $15. However   , it will not work to buy these KFC products at the checkout of one of the restaurants. Instead, users need  to go to the company's website and order home delivery . This will add $6 to the cost.

Bitcoin Bucket - a dish that can be purchased from KFC for bitcoins

The order is paid through the page of the BitPay payment operator. Since the cryptocurrency rate relative to the Canadian dollar is constantly changing, KFC has created a special page  on Facebook, where you can find the current price of the dish in bitcoins.

The promotion is only valid in Canada. Nothing has been reported about its availability in other countries. KFC noted that in case of successful testing, payment for orders with bitcoins and other cryptocurrency can be implemented in relation to other dishes.

Of course, we do not know for sure what bitcoins are and how they work, but this should not prevent you from enjoying the tastiest chicken, "says the Twitter blog of the Canadian representative office of KFC.

Among other things, KFC has prepared a special offer for bitcoin creator Satoshi Nakamoto. They promise to give him a free Bitcoin Bucket if he finally reveals his identity.

According to Fortune, some restaurants operating under the KFC franchise previously began to accept bitcoins, but the action in Canada was the first time that the parent company itself mastered the digital currency.

In the summer of 2017, the Russian Burger King announced a tender for the development of software that will allow the company to accept cryptocurrencies for payment. Later, the company released its own cryptocurrency "vopperkoin" on the international platform Waves.[2]
