Data breach of millions of visitors
On October 10, 2024, it became known that cybercriminals had entered the Burger King IT infrastructure. As a result of the hack, the personal data of millions of visitors to this fast food chain was leaked.
According to the Telegram channel "Information Leaks," the attackers had at their disposal 5,627,676 lines of data covering the period from May 31, 2018 to August 25, 2024. Stolen information such as customer names, phone numbers (4,886,993 unique combinations), email addresses (3,163,628 unique e-mails), dates of birth, gender, cities of location, favorite categories/dishes, order dates.
It is noted that the stolen information could be extracted from the base of the mobile application. The data is publicly available on the Internet. Anton Gorelkin, Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Committee on Information Policy, Information Technology and Communications, wrote about hacking the Burger King network in his Telegram channel.
We are waiting for an official statement from the fast food chain. Unfortunately, since revolving fines for leaks have not yet been introduced, if the incident is confirmed, the company can get off with coupons for free burgers, says Gorelkin. |
The Burger King company itself, as of October 10, 2024, does not comment on the situation in any way. With detailed information about the customers of the restaurant chain, attackers can organize deeply personalized phishing attacks and other fraudulent schemes aimed at stealing money. Thus, cybercriminals get the opportunity to euthanize the vigilance of victims, which significantly increases the chances of success of a fraudulent campaign. Phone numbers can also be used for mass advertising calls.[1]

History
The first Burger King restaurant was originally called Insta Burger King, opened in 1953 in the Miami suburbs by James McLamore and David Edgerton (both Cornell University graduates), but ran into financial difficulties.
McLamore, visiting the McDonald's restaurant, which at that time was owned by Dick and Mac McDonald in San Bernardino, California, got acquainted with the production of burgers, the method of manufacture, equipment and decided to create his own version of this fast food system.
In 1959, the number of Burger King restaurants rose to five in Miami and the suburbs. By 1960, McLamore and Edgerton decided to expand Burger King's fast food chain nationally using the franchise system, a popular method for expansion due to its low capital cost to the parent company. At the same time, they register Burger King corp. and begin selling franchises to private owners in the United States. In 2006, the company went public.
2020: Launch of restaurants with conveyors to deliver meals to cars
At the end of October 2020, Burger King launched restaurants of a new format with conveyors for delivering dishes to the car itself. As stated in the network, the new sites will be 60% less than the existing ones.
Visitors can park their cars in a designated area under solar-powered sheds. After placing the order through the application, the client must scan the QR code at the parking spot, and the employee will deliver the order directly to the car.
You can also receive orders by driving past the diner, and two or three additional lanes will significantly speed up this process. Some venues have also allocated a motorcycle lane. Customers will also be able to pick up an order placed in advance through the app from special lockers on the roadway. Food arrives in lockers to dispense orders directly from the kitchen.
Also, if customers place orders in advance through the Burger King app, they can park in dedicated parking spaces to deliver the order "on the curb." Through the app, they will be able to notify the diner of the time of arrival, and the order will be delivered directly to the car.
The eateries also have a dedicated section to take orders from pedestrians and cyclists who can order takeaways. In addition, customers will be able to snack in the dining room outdoors or in the renovated dining room under the roof.
The new concept design of eateries will also be used in busy urban areas with high demand. Central to these will be a suspended kitchen above the roadway, allowing more visitors to be served in a smaller space. Because the kitchen is upstairs, orders will be delivered to machines via belt conveyors. According to Burger King, this design provides 100% contactless interaction.[2]

Activities in the world
Over 12 thousand Burger King restaurants operate in more than 75 countries of the world, which serve about 12 million visitors daily. Of these, about 1,300 belong to the company, the rest are franchised.
In Israel, all restaurants in this chain are kosher.
In Australia, there is a master franchise "Burger King" under its own name "Hungry Jack's" ("Hungry Jack's Restaurant"), named after the owner, Jack Covin. This happened because the trading name "Burger King" was already taken. In 1996, Burger King registered in Australia under this name and demanded that the owner of the Hungry Jack's chain rebrand, to which the owner refused. From 1996 to 2002, a trial took place, during which the Hungry Jack's and Burger King chains existed in parallel in the country. In 2003, an agreement was reached between the parties - the Hungry Jack's chain confirmed the right of master franchisees and all Burger King restaurants that had existed since 1996 were either closed or renamed Hungry Jack's.
