2022: Construction of the data center

As TAdviser found out on September 22, Yandex is building a new data center in Kaluga. This was told by a source close to the company, and the information is confirmed by the vacancies that Yandex posted in the public domain.

So, for example, Yandex needs a technical manager of a data center in Kaluga. In this vacancy, this object is named the largest data center of the[1]. Also, for example, a vacancy of a project manager has been published on the Yandex website, who will be responsible for the construction of a new data center in Kaluga. The same facility requires a logistics specialist, IT specialist, etc.

The company chose not to disclose details about the new data center at the time of publication.

According to the database of legal entities "Kontur. Focus," back in June 2021, the company registered a new legal entity - Yandex DC Kaluga, whose main activity is related to the use of computer technology and information technology.

This company is headed by Nikolai Ivanov, who is also the general director of Yandex DC (Yandex data center in Sasovo, Ryazan Region) and Yandex DC Vladimir (data center in the Vladimir Region). Since 2011, Nikolai Ivanov has been working as a project manager for the construction of data centers at Yandex.

As for filling the data center with computer technology, a source close to Yandex says that, like many others, the company has faced various difficulties related to logistics, supplies, etc., but at the moment there are no problems with further development.

For 10 years, Yandex has been using its own computing solutions in data centers. Components are used standard, but the design of the entire rack solution, including the motherboard, while its own, and production is carried out at contracted plants. This allows you to be flexible: you can use different sources of components, modify the design, etc.

On September 23, 2022, Yandex disclosed details about the creation of a new data center in Kaluga. As the company told TAdviser, the data center building will be located on the territory of the Grabtsevo industrial park. The opening of the first zone is scheduled for the second half of 2023.

According to the plans, the Kaluga data center will ensure the operation of the internal infrastructure of Yandex services and the Yandex Cloud cloud platform. The latter is located so far in three data centers located in the Vladimir, Ryazan and Moscow regions. Each availability zone is isolated from hardware and software failures in other zones. By deploying applications in several zones at once, customers can ensure fault tolerance of their applications and significantly reduce the likelihood of data loss, the company assures.

According to Yandex, in terms of the total payload on server racks, this will be the company's largest data center and one of the largest in Russia. It will house more than 3.8 thousand server racks with a load of 15KW for each. The area of the data center will be 130 thousand square meters. m. The total design capacity of the site is 63 MW, which is 1.5 times higher than the capacity of the most highly loaded Yandex data center existing as of September 23, 2022.

Despite the large capacity supplied, the company's specialists predict that electricity will be consumed efficiently - the average annual PUE (Power Utilization Efficiency) will be 1.07-1.09. Thus, the IT equipment of the data center will consume about 58 MW.

High energy efficiency will be achieved, among other things, through friculation - the cooling technology of the data center. In both winter and summer, the server racks will be cooled by ordinary outdoor air. Due to this, the data center requires half as much electricity per year to support the same number of servers, Yandex explained.

The uninterrupted operation of the data center will be ensured by the development of the company's own power supply equipment. This is the approach chosen by Yandex - connection via high voltage lines (110 kV and above) directly to the networks of national operators with the construction of their own cable lines and substations.
