Muroosystems Corp bought Nukem Technologies
The German subsidiary of Rosatom, Nukem Technologies Engineering Services, has signed an agreement to sell its business to the Japanese IT company Muroosystems Corp. This became known in July 2024.
According to Kommersant, the terms of the transaction were not disclosed, but it is expected that its closure will occur by mid-August 2024. Nukem Technologies Engineering Services is a subsidiary of Nukem Technologies - one of the world's oldest companies specializing in decommissioning and radioactive waste management.
Rosatom acquired Nukem in 2009 for €23.5 million, counting on the development of the direction for the decommissioning of nuclear power plants in foreign markets. The main market of the company was the countries of the European Union, where Nukem was engaged in the dismantling of power units in Germany and Sweden, as well as the construction of a waste processing complex at the Khmelnytsky nuclear power plant (Ukraine).
Despite the lack of direct sanctions against Rosatom or Nukem from the EU, after the start of a special military operation in Ukraine, the company had difficulties obtaining new orders. In 2023, Rosatom carried out a financial recovery of Nukem and paid off receivables to increase the attractiveness of the asset, but the sale did not take place due to legal uncertainty.
In the spring of 2024, the German management of Nukem initiated a self-governing bankruptcy procedure in accordance with German law. The main purpose of this procedure was to preserve the company's operating activities and find a new investor or buyer.
Rosatom confirmed that the decision to withdraw from the asset was made in connection with current geopolitical restrictions and pressure on Russian owners in the EU countries. The state corporation noted that over the years of being in the Rosatom circuit, Nukem received a number of important references and significant financial support.
The buyer of Nukem - the Japanese company Muroosystems - has existed since 2006 and specializes in IT solutions related to data centers, as well as participates in energy development projects. In December 2022, the company was negotiating with the Kyrgyz government on projects to build a hydroelectric power station.[1]
Dismantling of Ingall NPP in Lithuania
The dismantling of the Ignalinsky NPP is carried out by the German company NUKEM, which is wholly owned by Atomstroyexport, and this is the engineering division of the state corporation Rosatom. For more details see Energy of Lithuania.
2023: The West is hampered by Russian control over the company after the outbreak of the conflict in Ukraine
When European countries want to decommission outdated nuclear plants, they often turn to Nukem. Behind the scenes, dozens of nuclear engineers, radiation safety experts and government regulators are monitoring the operation, which could cost up to a billion dollars and take years to plan and implement. According to Michael Bechler of Uniper SE, who in 2023 leads the dismantling of the Swedish Barsebek nuclear power plant, that is why there are only a few players in the decommissioning business of highly radioactive facilities.
Among the oldest and most experienced are the German company Nukem Technologies Engineering Services GmbH, which for decades has offered its unique services in Asia and Africa, as well as throughout Europe. The company is fully owned by the Russian corporation Rosatom, which after the outbreak of the conflict in Ukraine puts it at the center of an uncomfortable confrontation.
