2023: Announcement of UHF Radio Frequency Tags for Drill Pipe and Tubing

On April 10, 2023, Micron announced the development of a radio frequency UHF tag for remote identification of drilling and tubing. RFID labeling allows you to automate accounting for operations, track the operating time and residence time of objects in aggressive environments.

According to the company, the possibility of using RFID technology in the production, oil and gas and heavy industries with strict operating conditions depends on the impact resistance, thermal resistance and chemical resistance of the labels. Micron's invention is a programmed mark with a ceramic antenna, which, depending on the problem being solved, is screwed in, glued or pressed into a metal object, withstands high temperatures (from -50 ° C to + 200 ° C) and aggressive media thanks to a strong body. It is waterproof, withstands loads without losing functionality when immersed in a well to a depth of 2 km.

The mark has a reading range of 2 meters when mounted in the metal column, 128 bits of EPC memory, an operating frequency of 867 MHz and a long information storage period. Round mark size 30 * 11mm.

The chip carries the necessary initial information about the pipe, and during the operation of the RFID terminal, the operations performed are recorded. The read data is sent to the information system, which calculates for each individual pipe, for example, its operating time, maintains a history of maintenance and repair. Based on this data, the current state of the operated pipe is determined.

Digital marking allows you to quickly keep records and control the degree of wear, reduces the time for inventory and search for property, optimizes the procedure for bypass and maintenance, minimizes accidents at work.

Micron has developed and tested 3 types of marks for marking metal pipes. After testing the test batches, the labels will go into serial production.
