2023: Development of a portable instrument for measuring round wood
Computer Vision Systems (part of the LANIT group), with the support of the Innovation Assistance Fund, is developing a portable device for measuring round wood without using reference lines. device is designed for automation of round wood measurement process in stacks, cassettes and timber trucks. The first tests showed an error of less than 3%. LANIT announced this on June 2, 2023.
A portable optical-electronic instrument for measuring wood can be used at forest user enterprises and in expert companies for high-precision measurement of wood without the use of auxiliary standards.
Unlike a smartphone with a Smart Timber system, the development of CMS, which has already proven effective for forest industry enterprises, it provides automatic determination of the position and size of each log without using any reference lines. The development team achieved this by using an additional depth camera.
As of June 2023, a fully functional prototype was assembled and software for processing measurements was developed. Specialists conduct its comprehensive tests with the support of one of the logging partners. When testing the prototype, it was possible to achieve accuracy of more than 97% in terms of the volume of measured wood (an error of less than 1% in linear dimensions) and confirm the possibility of field operation in a variety of conditions.
