2023: Transition to Russian-made Tantor DBMS based on PostgreSQL

In less than 5 months, as part of the digital transformation program and import substitution plan in the IT segment, RusHydro transferred its IT infrastructure to the DBMS and the modular administration and monitoring platform Tantor and centralized the management of data server databases based on the PostgreSQL DBMS. This was announced on June 13, 2023 by the Astra Group of Companies

The pilot launch started in early 2023, and already in May the energy holding moved to industrial operation. As of June 2023, various PostgreSQL servers are connected to the Tantor platform. The use of the platform made it possible to largely automate processes and reduce the labor costs of specialized personnel. The fundamental reasons for choosing the Russian Tantor platform as an alternative to Oracle Enterprise Manager (OEM) are a convenient and intuitive interface, a visual configuration of DBMS settings with a built-in adaptive hint service for a large number of parameters, advanced monitoring and query profiler, DBMS logic analytics, etc.

Centralized management of database servers is at the heart of both existing systems and newly created ones. We are actively working on a total transition to Russian IT systems. A year ago, we, like many companies, lacked a domestic system with similar functionality for PostgreSQL-based servers. That's one of the reasons why we chose the Tantor platform. The joint work showed another important quality - this is support from the vendor: our requests are quickly processed and implemented. So, a number of wishes regarding the development of functionality similar to OEM have already been implemented in the latest version, which we are testing, and the rest have found a place in the development roadmap, - said Konstantin Atanzhiev, head of the data processing department at RusHydro IT service.

As of June 2023, a special situation has developed on the Russian DBMS market: in connection with the departure of Western players, the main target DBMS were the solutions of domestic developers, where they are used as the PostgreSQL core. This automatically excludes customer companies from falling into conditions when they are forced to work with only one DBMS vendor - the so-called vendor lock. This all suggests that the success of the DBMS vendor will depend not on the number of years of presence on the market, various certificates and awards, but on the functionality and quality of the product and technical support, - said Vadim Yatsenko, General Director of Tantor Labs. - The Tantor DBMS in the Special Edition contains all the necessary functionality for high-load systems. The Tantor platform significantly reduces the path of development of PostgreSQL administration expertise and allows fine-tuning of database servers, data schema maintenance, incident investigation and SQL query profiling using a convenient graphical interface.
