"Five" goes to eco-friendly refrigerators

30.06.23, 16:42, Msk

The well-known retail chain Pyaterochka announced the transition to eco-friendly refrigerators. A new pilot project launched by the company aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Pyaterochka stores replace freons and switch to refrigeration equipment running on natural refrigerant (R290), which is a colorless non-toxic gas and has zero ozone depletion potential, as well as low global warming potential. It is assumed that improving energy efficiency and using refrigerant with low GWP during the R290 transition will help reduce direct emissions.

Replacing refrigeration and air conditioning is an important part of our decarbonization plan. The implementation of such projects helps us get closer to meeting the goals of reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Currently, we are replacing equipment, both as part of the reconstruction of old stores and when opening new ones, "said Alina Yukhnevich, head of the sustainable development of the Pyaterochka retail chain.

New refrigeration equipment in Pyaterochka

By the end of June 2023, three Pyaterochka stores were transferred to innovative refrigeration equipment. By September 2023, it is planned to launch in 10 more retail outlets.

According to Alina Yukhnevich, this initiative became part of the Pyaterochka with Care program in the direction of Ecology. The company plans to continue the active development of the program.

As part of this initiative, Pyaterochka is also switching to safer gases, gradually replacing traditional freon in air conditioners with more energy efficient R32 refrigerant compressors in its premises. In addition to improved environmental safety indicators by almost two-thirds - the PGP coefficient for R32 is 675 versus 2088 for R410 - the refrigerant can also be reused and, if necessary, disposed of, the company explained.
