2023: Developing an algorithm to analyze passenger traffic on roads

On July 14, 2023, the Tele2 operator announced that it had developed an algorithm for analyzing passenger traffic on roads. This technological solution based on artificial intelligence allows us to conduct research at a qualitatively different level: not only to determine sections of roads with maximum load, but also to draw conclusions about the socio-demographic characteristics of the transport flow. The development will be useful for planning the construction of transport interchanges, advertising business for finding the right audience, retailers when opening new outlets.

The developed algorithm is superior to traditional methods of conducting such studies: surveys and observation. Unlike field studies, when using big data , errors related to the human factor are excluded, the analysis takes less time, data the operator is allowed to highlight and specify information about the target audiences in specific locations.

The difficulty of developing such a solution on the side of the telecom operator lies in determining exactly the movements of motorists in the entire data array and correlating the data on their movement with the road map.   • Obtaining azimuth and distance from the mobile device to the base station due to equipment settings.
  • An algorithmic component that allows obtaining more accurate geocoordinates by a model method using GPS coordinates as a standard.
  • Calculation of the most probable route of movement along the highway graph using algorithms for finding the shortest paths on the graph. At the same time, the algorithm is optimized taking into account the large amount of data entering and the need to work in real time.

As a result, Tele2 received calculation and visualization of traffic routes throughout Russia. The algorithm developed by the company allows you to find sections of roads and understand how many people drive along them, as well as understand the socio-demographic characteristics of this audience.
