Healthy food in Russia

2023: The Government of the Russian Federation approved a strategy for the development of organic food production until 2030

In July 2023, Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin signed a decree approving a strategy for the development of organic production until 2030. Among the main goals of the document, its authors attributed the development of the domestic market for organic agricultural products, an increase in the export of this type of food, as well as the introduction of new agricultural technologies.

Mishustin noted that there is a demand for organic products both in Russia and abroad, "consumers are trying to choose healthy food for themselves and their loved ones." According to the Chairman of the Government of the Russian Federation, entrepreneurs, in turn, are more actively using advanced technologies in production, which reduces the burden on the environment.

The strategy defines five industry development targets:

  • The first concerns the volume of production of final organic products for the domestic market. By 2030, it should grow to 114.5 billion rubles. For comparison, in 2021 such an indicator was 9.1 billion rubles.
  • The second indicator is the dynamics of production development. If in 2021 it increased by 13.3% compared to 2020, then by 2030 the annual increase should already be 20.7%. The third indicator is associated with the volume of organic consumption. Compared to 2021 in 2030, it should grow more than 6 times - up to 149.8 billion rubles.
  • The fourth indicator reflects the dynamics of organic food exports - in 2030 its volume should amount to 27.8 billion rubles. At the same time, similar figures in 2021 were at the level of 3.7 billion rubles. The priority market for Russian organic food in the strategy is China, which in recent years has become the world's largest importer of food. Russian producers are ready to supply the Chinese market with corn, soybeans, pine nut. Barley, frozen berries, honey and nuts also have great export potential. In addition to China, Russian organic products should find their niche in the markets of the Persian Gulf states, Southeast Asia and neighboring countries.
  • The fifth indicator is the area of land on which organic farming technology is used. In six and a half years, it should be more than 4.2 million hectares, while in 2021 such crops amounted to only 656 thousand hectares. The strategy defines the involvement of new land in agricultural turnover that could be used to grow environmentally friendly crops as another priority direction for the development of the industry.
